Hate to do this - tires

Hey List,

I hate bring this subject up again so soon but I am starting to look at new
sport touring tires and was looking for input. I'm running on Avons right
now and they were good. As they wore they were a little less inspiring than
when new. Actually my first set of Avons 4 years ago I thought were better
than the ones I got the year before last (Azzaros, I think).

I'm interested in Pirellis, Avons, Metzlers, Brigstones, Continentals,
pretty much anything but Dunlops.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Tom

Why would you not consider the Dunlop Road smarts? Especially on the back.

Re: Hate to do this - tires

While on my week long road trip down the CA coast I had need to throw a new set of tires on the RT.
The dealer had both the Roadsmarts & the the Michelins in stock.
The Roadsmarts were nearly $100 less than the Pilot Roads.
Needless to say the 1st 400 miles on the Roadsmarts have performed flawlessly.

Re: Hate to do this - tires

I just looked at Metzelers web page and found no reference to an M4. Are you talking about the ME Z4 or has your tire been discontinued?

Re: Hate to do this - tires

Preliminary reports from FJR owners (bigger, heavier, torqueyer, tire
eaters) have been very positive. Most say they get equal or better
traction and much better rear mileage (due to dual compound) on the rear
than the Pilot Road 2. The jury is still out on the fronts. Perhaps a
match up of the Roadsmart rear and a Strada or PR front would be magic
combo.

RE: Hate to do this - tires

I've used the Avon Azaros (AV49 or 45 front, AV46 rear) almost exclusively on the VFR, ZX12R and Concours for some years. Multiple sets on all 3 bikes, and have worked well and lasted relatively well.

Supposedly their replacement, the Avon Storms, are even better.

I've had a Pilot Power on the ZX12R, didn't like it much in wet/cold conditions, so it was replaced with an Avon.

For the current set of tires, I was itching to try the Michelin Road 2s, but the price and availability just didn't make sense for me.

I know you said you didn't want Dunflops, and a few months back I would have agreed with you, as I detested my previous Dunlop. But the new Roadsmart dual compounds work just fine, are price competitive, stick well in wet, dry and cold, and have neutral handling.

IMHO, at the current iteration of tire tech, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the top end tires: Michelin Pilot 2s, the Avon Storms, Dunflop Roadsmarts, will all do a more than adequate job for the average to above average street rider on most bikes.

I thought those were discontinued in favor of the Z6 Roadtec, years ago? For sure they don't seem to be available (and haven't been for years) at the tire dealers I frequent in the USA.

They used to be my favorite tire on the Kaw Concours until I moved to Avon Azaros (AV45/46). The Z4s were very stable, and OK in the wet, but I wouldn't call them exactly fast handling.
I also suffered a few instances of rear wheel spin-up when accelerating hard at 70 - 80 mph on wet freeways, which on a 94 hp / 680 lb bike shouldn't be an issue, and which was not an issue on the Avons.

Most folks I speak to that run the Z6 prefer that tire to the Z4, which makes sense as Metzeler released it as the Z4 replacement.

I also see the site you supplied lists the Z2 as still being available (and in rear Concours size). Lots of Concours riders complained bitterly when that tire was discontinued, as it reduced the radial sport-touring rubber selection for the rear wheel down to Avon and Dunlop, and I believe Michelin (which I think has also since been discontinued).

Re: Hate to do this - tires / BT 021s GP....

OK for the sake of experimentation, I'll be the BT Guinea Pig.......

Just got a set of BT-021s delivered to the door yesterday.

Look very nice and the front tread pattern has been changed from the BT-020s and look not to?be cup challenged...... only time will tell.

They are going to replace a set of BT 020s.

Re: Hate to do this - tires / BT 021s GP / Initial Indications.....

OK, the BTs have been spooned on the wheels, balanced and put back on Ver. 96.

Just a few miles so far, but WOW, it's a different bike.

No more shimmy (the previous 020s front were not true) and shake, will put the GIVI top case back on and see what happens.....

WoooHoooo.......

This time from Chapparal, I wonder if the "beat the best price by $1 DKs" were faulty......
