Help, MAP Sensor and Stealer (not steeler) woes -long rant
Hey all,
Well, it finally happened to me, my VFR wouldn't start. Cranked and cranked, sounded like it was gonna start a few times, but nothing. Not having the time to check it out I decided to take it to the stealer to get it fixed... big mistake. I took off all the plastics, didn't want them to scratch my new paint job and thought it would be cheaper if they didn't have to bother with them, and trailered it to the shop. They quoted no more than a couple hours labor to figure it out and would let me know.... After a couple days I called them and was told they believed it was the fuel pressure regulator because the spark plugs were fuel fouled and it was running really rich. That was the only thing they found that caused this problem in the past so they thought it might be it. After a quote of $250.00 total and the assurance that they wouldn't charge me for the part if it didn't fix the problem I agreed. Part ordered... After calling them, notice they never call me, they said the part was installed but that wasn't the problem so they wouldn't charge me for it... and that they were done. They said it would take hours and hours of diagnosis to find the problem and that I probably wouldnt' want to spend that kind of money. That and it was probably the ECU (translation = $900.00) but they couldn't say for sure. My total was $85.00 and it was ready to trailer home, running with new spark plugs... that would soon be fouled again. I go to pick it up and the total is over $120.00!! WHAT? After talking with the service manager, the service advisor wasn't there, he said that the LABOR cost was $85.00, the plugs were additional. Funny how my question, "So what are we looking at cost-wise right now?" was answered with "$85.00," not "$85.00 plus the plugs," or "plus parts." These guys were batting zero with me! Not being happy about the situation I asked the service manager what my options were and he said it was a matter of replacing parts to see what fixes it. He wished they had another VFR they could borrow parts from to see what might work. Well, that made me feel much better... about going somewhere else! There is one high point to this story, I had decided to bring my seat and tail section and ride it home rather than trailer it. It just so happens that I remembered all my riding gear and left the seat and tail at home. Not wanting to drive across town again I decided to ride it like it was, no headlight, no plastics, no seat, FI light on steady all the way. We zip tied up the loose wires and off we went, Daniel following me in my truck because I didn't have any brake lights. No head light either but that only worried me when a LEO passed us going the other way, he just kept going. Got a lot of looks and a warm bottom but otherwise it was a smooth ride home. After returning home Daniel and I grabbed my Honda manual and checked for the FI fault code, the FI light wasn't on before I dropped it off. One flash, pause, two flashes. One flash, pause, two flashes. Hmmmm, both faults point to the MAP sensor. After performing a few more checks from the manual it appears that the MAP sensor is the culprit. Gonna check on the cost today, hopefully less than $900.00. Last night as of the time it took to put everything back together and the plastics back on, about and hour or so, the FI light is OFF. It comes on with the rest of the idiot lights but stays off after. We went for a ride last night, Dan on his 02, and everything seems great. Was a hose to the MAP sensor off? Did unplugging it and plugging it back in fix the problem? This morning, same thing, no FI light and she runs like a champ. Next? Should I get a MAP sensor? Should I ride it as is? Any other suggestions? As usual your input is greatly appreciated!
