I went down, No I'm not kidding.
time 5:20 this afternoon.
location a 270+ degree right hand ramp that is slightly bowl shaped and I regularly take it at more than 55 (touching down peg feelers and boot toe sliders in various spots) speed when it all went wrong - 35 mph. extenuating conditions - Silver Nissan sedan closing rapidly on my tail. Best description of crash - Dug a boot toe & peg (or possibly the centerstand) into the pavement and lifted the rear. Washed out the front as well and slid into the outside curb. Result: A high-side with four or five bouncing cartwheels, the bike flipped at least once. Personal Damage - 'Serious Contusions of three ribs', Bone bruise in the right palm and assorted aches. Rode the bike home then went to the ER, was there until 11:40 tonight. Had Xrays of hand, head and ribs, Cat scans of head, chest and stomach, Two bags of IV saline, a shot of morphine, blood work, urinalysis and all the poking/proding/squeezing/pressing/etc that I could stand. Equipment Damage - pretty much everything, both gloves are chewed at (one has holes ground through the armour), jacket has outer layer torn from elbow and back pad sections. Riding pants have several tears around edges of armour, zippers and seams, Helmet has big gouges in top with top vent torn away plus visor only stays attached when closed and right boot has collapsed (crushed) toe section and lots abrasion damage. Now let me say this, I was very pleased with all the gear, it did its job very well and I know that I would be in much worse shape if it performed as well as it did. I'll review the exact pieces, the damage and take pictures of the remains as I can. Finally, Bike damage. Initial post OS survey - both mirrors, ZG 'ST' screen, upper fairing, front fender, Meter surround, left bar, left side bag, left side bag mount, tank bag. Second survey - front wheel, left side peg, front forks are tweaked (can't tell if they slipped in the triples or if they are bent yet), Inner fairing, Upper inner fairing, fairing stay, centerstand, Tank bag mount (tank bag is okay just filthy) Third survey - tomorrow if I can. I'll be taking pictures of the damage as soon as I can (likely tomorrow) and calling the insurance ASAP. I doubt that I'll be making WDGAH now unless I buy a big back pack, a new tank bag mount and change plans to ride the RC51 up. I hope this is reasonably clear since I'm medicated and exhausted at this point. Very sorry to hear that mate.
But the usual, at least you are okay, bit. That is the really good bit. Been there, binned that but still able to come back and ride again. Hope you are insured, takes some pain out. Take care mate. Good to hear that you're mostly ok. You will be hurting for the next few days.
Here is an interesting read. The dirt is just as dangerous as the pavement. But I'm not sure if the best course of action is take it to work and meet the insurance adjuster there with my gear or leave it here at home and make them come to me. Either way, I don't see un-repairable damage so I'll be getting it fixed. If they total it however, I'll be putting it right back on the trailer and bringing it home to save on labor. I do have the RC registered and running, but I was not really ready to start riding it everyday. I was not planning on taking a major ride on that bike yet. Whatever comes, comes, but I will say this, I have some very evil and angry thoughts about the silver Nissan driver right now (Batteries, spark plugs, and more). Re: I went down, No I'm not kidding.
"Whatever comes, comes, but I will say this, I have some very evil and
angry thoughts about the silver Nissan driver right now (Batteries, spark plugs, and more)." I am sorry to hear you crashed and glad you are OK. I think it is a bit of a stretch to blame it on someone who was behind you. I know it is a natural reaction but it seems me that if you crashed your bike due to hard grounding of chassis parts at 20mph less than you have taken that corner before, you where doing something wrong. I can't let a car or bike behind me dictate how I ride. The only way they can cause me to crash would be to run into me or make it so clear that they are going to run into me that I have to leave the road to avoid it. RE: I went down, No I'm not kidding.
Damn John, sorry to hear of your fall. Glad you are mostly ok but hate to hear that something like this happened to you. At least you were not going 55 this time!
How did the closing Nissan play into the fall and how did you touch down pegs at 35 on a sweeper that you normally take at 55+? I'd be inclined to look for spilled anti-freeze or some other cause for the fall. Again, glad to hear that you are largely ok. Fwd: RE:I went down, No I'm not kidding.
Thanks guys for all the replies.
I also want to thank everybody that send comments about the circumstances of the crash. To be 100% honest, I caused the wreck. I'm still not completely sure how I managed to stack it all up that badly, nor am I 100% on exactly what was the final trigger, but I can tell you this. I have learned my lesson about how much you give up when you try to 'just back off and take it easy'. If I had ridden through that corner like I did the nine times a week, the whole thing would not have happened (and I would not be sitting here trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together). I do appreciate everyone's comments, since like any combat pilot, I'm going to review this crash to death and then some. But right now, I think it is time for another pause to try and catch up. Maybe in a little while the rain will stop and then I'll go have a third look at the bike. PS. I don't know that my attending WDGAH is out or not yet, its just everything is in the air right now. Re: I went down, No I'm not kidding.
Glad to hear you're alive. A woman right up the street low-sided going
around the on-ramp )another nice cloverleaf to the highway) and slid underneath a car. She didn't make it. I hit a decent sized dip going around a curve and onto a bridge and caught a little air, handlebars crossed up and I high-sided over the handlebars. Bike cartwheeled and I skidded along. I was going probably 45-50mph. I fractured my wrist and ankle, and sprained/pulled a muscle in my back. I wasn't wearing a jacket so I got some road rash on my shoulders and arms. The road rash has pretty much healed. My fractures are still healing. And I've got almost all the parts necessary to repair the bike. Liability only on my '86. I remember sliding on my right side thinking I need to roll over or this will be really bad. so I rolled over got flung onto my head and shoulders and say the bike fly by me as I skidded down the road. I was thinking. "Wow, I'm going pretty fast, my helmet makes a weird sound scraping on the pavement, I hope I stop soon." . so surreal. 2-3 days later the back started to REALLY hurt and made life really uncomfortable. I'm a LOT better now (accident 7-15) my back still is sore and my ankle and wrist are still cracked.. I should have the bike all repaired by the time I am ready to ride it. The lesson I learned was "WEAR your jacket" the fractures and back pain would still have occurred but the rash wouldn't have aggravated things so much. RE: I went down, No I'm not kidding.
For those of you talking about fixing bikes that have
cart-wheeled.... If after adding up the cost of all the parts it doesn't come to a total then I suggest you have the bike measured by the local computrack provider to make sure it's straight. Here's the deal, contrary to popular thought aluminum framed MC's are not STIFF in all directions. They're stiff where they need to be to handle proper loading during riding conditions. They don't handle being cart-wheeled and they will often twist the headstock or tubes/trees just by being knocked over hard on the bar-end. IOW if you want to buy the bits and put it back to good-looking go ahead but there's a good chance that something will be twisted in the chassis. Many insurance companies are now starting to accept computrack as one of the expenses for fixing a bike. Get it measured and if after all the price still doesn't = total get it made straightened. RE: I went down, No I'm not kidding.
John,
* Glad to hear you're not too banged up.* Always good to take an honest review of the situation and make changes in style, approach, attitude according to what you find.* I guess that's why I do let it out more on trackdays than on the street--works for me. * Your one pic from the rear looks as if your swingarm is out of line with the centerline of the bike.* It may be your rear subframe is out of line...hopefully the swingarm and frame are still a pair... * If not, definitely go to a frame straightening specialist -- we should have a couple in the VA, MD area because of the racers in the area...definitely take the fork tubes out and make sure they are straight first--easiest thing to do.** I'm pretty sure you know all this, I'm just thinking out loud... * Get well/unsore and put the RC to good use!* See if someone will let you borrow a pair of helibars or something for a couple months...probably need a pair fitted for hte RC though... * Take care, * Matt Roth Matt _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

RE: I went down, No I'm not kidding.
Good advice - if you're thinking about keeping the bike and fixing it, have the frame looked at first, and get an idea on how much it will cost to get it back in line. By the sound of it, it will need some work.
Rudy Fierros '95 VFR750 - Twobros xmetal slipon, reworked suspension by Lindemann, Factory jet kit, Zero gravity DB, Sargent seat - just turned over 105K miles 03/15/2008. '71 Chevy stepside - Porsche guards red, lowered 4" rear, 3" front - cool cruiser. --- On Tue, 8/12/08, Matthew Roth > From: Matthew Roth > Subject: RE: I went down, No I'm not kidding. > To: "vfr" > Date: Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 10:48 AM > John, > * > Glad to hear you're not too banged up.* Always good to > take an honest review of the situation and make changes in > style, approach, attitude according to what you find.* I > guess that's why I do let it out more on trackdays than > on the street--works for me. > * > Your one pic from the rear looks as if your swingarm is out > of line with the centerline of the bike.* It may be your > rear subframe is out of line...hopefully the swingarm and > frame are still a pair... > * > If not, definitely go to a frame straightening specialist > -- we should have a couple in the VA, MD area because of the > racers in the area...definitely take the fork tubes out and > make sure they are straight first--easiest thing to do.** > I'm pretty sure you know all this, I'm just thinking > out loud... > * > Get well/unsore and put the RC to good use!* See if > someone will let you borrow a pair of helibars or something > for a couple months...probably need a pair fitted for hte RC > though... > * > Take care, > * > Matt Roth > > Matt > > > _______________________________________________ > vfr mailing list > vfr@xxxxxx > For subscription and delivery options: > https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |
