GPS order for Zumo backordered 3-4 weeks again!

I ordered a Zumo 450 from TECHONdigital.com on July 11th for $350 delivered, which is about $100+ less than anywhere else online.* They said I had to call in and talk to one of their guys to complete the order.*
*
I talked to them and they pushed an $80 2GB SD card on me and I said no.* Guy gets off the phone, comes back and said it would be back ordered 3-4 weeks, did I want to cancel the order or wait...I said I'd wait.* I called back today and got the same thing, that it would be another 3-4 weeks on back-order--but no bugging about the SD card.* I'm wondering if I call in Sept it will be another 3-4 weeks...

I'd love to find out if someone else orders it WITH an SD card to see if they say the item will ship in a day or two...just wondering if I'll ever see the Zumo I ordered or not...

Matt

Let me guess...this place is located in Brooklyn?

The high-pressure/always "backordered" sales tactics in electronix stuff
always seems to be HQ'ed in Crooklyn.

You have much more patience than I do. I was in the same boat with a
camcorder recently. Whenever I called, many many many rings/wait time, then when I
asked about status I got "Do you want to order it?"

I asked about status again, and was promptly hung up on. Each and every
single time. Every time. This happened 20X times over many days/weeks. I ask, they
hang up.

I made a little call to Sony, and the NY State attoney's office, and filed
claims with both of them.

Lou, what's up with your NY peeps and their "bidness practices"?

This is NORMAL business practice for these guys.
Don't torture yourselves. Go somewhere else. 'Cuz if it too good to be
true . . .
I bought a nice Nikon recently from Adorama. No problems. Was not the
lowest price but it came right away as promised.
Caveat emptor.

Re: GPS order for Zumo backordered 3-4 weeks again!

Matt -

In my experience dealing with online sales people... If it seems like a
deal too good to be true, and they are an online store, either the product
is refurbished, grey market, or a scam. In this case, it sounds like you
will eventually get a product, but will it be worth the wait? Probably not,
as they seem to be selling grey market equipment. What is grey market
equipment? Well, it's not stolen or otherwise illegal, that's black
market. White market goods are available through 'authorized dealers' or
normal resale channels. Grey market goods are those that kinda fall in the
middle waters - 'lost' shipments which have had insurance claim payouts,
other market goods (Japanese cameras sold in the US w/o authorization from
the MFG) - often these items are as good as new and work great, the drawback
is when you need to have them serviced or warrantied. Then the serial #
comes up as invalid for the service market and you foot the bill for repairs
at full price.

Reference this google search: TECHONdigital
search
Also, see this wiki entry on Grey Market
Goods

My suggestion - cancel the order and spend the extra hundred on immediate
delivery and confidence in warranty.

Matt, you might want to google "TECHONdigital.com" for some
amusement...while you're on hold with your CC company, cancelling the
charges, and the BBB, filing a complaint...

Ugh, I got my Zumo 500 in Turkey, took 3 days to get to me, so I can't
say that's too long or short for USA, seems too long..
Btw, why the 450? I sometimes kick myself for not getting the 550.. -turgut

Austin Street.

Formerly of Van Der Veer, er, Vanderveer "Estates" (read: bring two
extra mags and a Ka-Bar) off Nostrand Ave.

Not all the electronics shops in Brooklyn are crooked by the way, but
their mail order sides are all drop-ship under separate DBAs and some
folks find the lack of Saturday hours a bit off-putting...

Re: GPS order for Zumo backordered 3-4 weeks again!

Matt, I tried to order my daughter a Garmin 660 for her college graduation present in May and ran into this EXACT scenario with 86th Street Photo in NYC. When I did a little checking, I learned that this is the drill.... they bait you in with a low price and then try to make their profit on outrageously priced accessories (they tried to sell me an $80 2GB SD card as well) and if you don't bite, they put you in backorder purgatory. This is well documented on the net and someone should inform the NY attorney general's office of the practice. I have intended to but have not gotten around to it yet.

I learned that the owner is a middle eastern guy who owns several other online companies and they all do this same thing. I suspect the one you are dealing with is one of them. I demanded to speak with the owner but was never allowed to. I did, however, have a very rude encounter with the manager of 86th Street Photo who hung up on me when I started accusing him of bait and switch sales schemes.

You will never get the unit unless you press it with the NY authorities and even then may not. I suspect NY authorities have bigger fish to fry. Currently there are 66 fraud reports filed with RipOffReport.com against 86th Street Photo on this very issue.

< delivered, which is about $100+ less than anywhere else online.? They said I
had to call in and talk to one of their guys to complete the order.?
?
I talked to them and they pushed an $80 2GB SD card on me and I said
no.? Guy gets off the phone, comes back and said it would be back ordered
3-4 weeks, did I want to cancel the order or wait...I said I'd wait.?
I called back today and got the same thing, that it would be another
3-4 weeks on back-order--but no bugging about the SD card.? I'm wondering
if I call in Sept it will be another 3-4 weeks...

I'd love to find out if someone else orders it WITH an SD card to see
if they say the item will ship in a day or two...just wondering if I'll
ever see the Zumo I ordered or not...

Mathew, you would be well advised to get as far away from that company as
possible. I've read complaints about them before on several boards. Here are
just a few things I googled on them. They should be forced to close their
doors:

I ordered a Zumo 450 from TECHONdigital.com on July 11th for $350 delivered,

I've purchased from Adorama myself (telescope). No problems at all.

This is NORMAL business practice for these guys.
Don't torture yourselves. Go somewhere else. 'Cuz if it too good to be
true . . .
I bought a nice Nikon recently from Adorama. No problems. Was not the
lowest price but it came right away as promised.
Caveat emptor.
My 2¢ worth.
