Shock replacement for touring setup?

I recently got a 1098 to handle sporty stuff so I'm looking to set up my 98
VFR as more of a tourer. Towards that end I've got a ZG ST screen, helibars,
throttlemeister on the way, but I don't know what to do about the rear
shock. I'm pretty sure my rear is a goner (I never really noticed how wonky
the VFR is in a turn til I started taking them on my Duc) and I know there's
a couple of options available for getting a better sport ride, but are these
also good options for a touring setup? I'm 5'6" with a 30" inseam so I don't
want to end up raising the rear ride much if at all, but I do plan to add
Givi hard bags to the setup for touring. Here what I know about so far from
googling:

Penske/Ohlins - cost 1K$!!!
OEM 929 shock - cheap, but requires modding the top mount?
??? - is there some other stock OEM shock off of, like a ST1100 or PC800 for
example that would work?

Is there someplace I can look up shock specs to determine what would work?
What are the relevant characteristics I need to be comparing?

Thanks much for any help,
Trey
