Need to replace valve cover gasket at 35K?

I have a 99 VFR800 and am about to do my second valve check at 35K. I checked them at 18K and all were in spec. When I put the bike back together I applied a thin layer of Permatex Ultra Blue Sensor Safe Silicone Gasket Maker on the valve cover gasket and reused the original gasket. At 18K the gasket looked like new and was still soft and pliable. I am about to do my second check at 35K and wonder if I will likely be able to continue to use the original valve cover gasket. New ones are $60 bucks and I would like to save that money unless the WOTL suggests this would be a mistake. How many of you have had good luck reusing these gaskets several times? Has anyone had a problem reusing them?

Vic

RE: Need to replace valve cover gasket at 35K?

Generation 4. 120,000 km (72,000 miles). Valve covers removed 4-5 times.
Never changed them. Never added any sealant. No leaks.

RE: Need to replace valve cover gasket at 35K?

Same here - gen 4 (1994). Last valve check at 73,000 miles, same
gaskets, no sealant needed, no leaks. (At ~90k miles, now overdue for
valve check, I expect the same results).

RE: Need to replace valve cover gasket at 35K?

Sounds like unless something really unusual happens, the original gaskets are good for a long long time! I'm glad to know that to say the least. The two gaskets plus the 4 that go around the plug holes are almost $80!

Thanks all!

Vic
