98-01 gauge cluster replacement bulbs
Anyone know what bulbs I need to get to replace the bulbs behind my
speedo and tach? All I can find in the manuals I've searched is 12v 3.4w (x2, I believe for the turn signal indicators) and 12v 1.7w (x5 for the various bulbs in the console). My turn signal indicator bulbs appear to maybe say 158 on them (tough to read and it looks like 758, but 158 at the stores looks like a match) and my other bulbs simply say 12v 1.7w but no number. Seems simple enough, but nobody at any auto parts stores know what any of their bulbs are other than 12v and the very technical data that "I think that one is brighter than that one". And, surprisingly, I can't seem to find any such (what would seem to me) simple information anywhere on the web either. Any help? Can I buy bulbs at the local auto parts store, or do I have to go to the Honda dealer? thanx for any tips, JimD _______________________________________________ Vfr mailing list Vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

It is a PITA to get all the plastic off to access the back of the dash. When I did it a couple of years ago I only needed maybe 5 bulbs. The extra $'s to do the rest were nothing in comparison to getting to them. I ordered from Ron Ayers or Service Honda, don't remember which. The microfich has all the part #s. Go to partsfish.com or bikebandit.com. >Anyone know what bulbs I need to get to replace the bulbs behind my speedo >and tach? A standard #194 or #168 incandescent will do just fine. However, I replaced mine with LED's and they've been great. You'll never ever have to replace another. You need to get the "wide angle" inverted cone tip LED's so you don't experience "spotlighting" of the gauge face where a single bulb resides. http://www.superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html The ones I used are the first ones listed on the page above. I got the blue ones for the instrument cluster, but if you don't like that, they also come in Red, Amber, White, Blue, Green and UV-blacklight. One word of warning: the LED's are polarity-dependent, so when you install them, have the key on and if they don't light, simply turn the bulb socket around 180' and reinstall. Helps to do it in a low-light environment so you can easily see the difference. I'd hate to see someone install all 11 cluster bulbs (5 for the gauge faces/LCD display, 6 for the idiot lights and turnsignals) with the key switch off only to find that about half of them don't light later on! Especially if you put the entire upper fairing back on! RE: 98-01 gauge cluster replacement bulbs
Just an FYI follow-up... I ended up using 161 bulbs for the 5 in the
console and so far they seem to be working fine with no ill effects, although they are a bit brighter than the 1.7w stock bulbs. I believe I ended up using 194 bulbs for the turn signal indicators. And despite all my research and asking questions everywhere, I never could find out the actual wattages or amperages of the standard bulbs.
