Powder coat wheels

I may be opening a big can of worms here but I need to have the rear wheel on my 98 VFR refinished. I have found a few sources on the web that claim powder coating is bad for aluminum wheels. They claim it ruins the heat treatment when the aluminum exceeds 300 degrees fahrenheit. I have talked to a lot places and they all claim it's fine. I talked to Trans Wheel corp they powder coat their wheels and claim it actually makes the wheel stronger. They claim their repaired wheels will meet or exceed all oem and government crash standards. They claim to have done testing on the wheels they have remanufactured. Trans Wheel is a nationwide company that fixes automotive wheels sort of like Maco. I'm making an assumption that the alloy used in cast car wheels is the same as the one used in motorcycle wheels. I talked to Dymag and RC components and they both offer powder coating although Dymag said their powder cures at 375 degrees. I tried contacting the manufacturer of the VFR wheel!
s Asahi tec but they refuse to answer. Doesn't suprise me as they don't sell to the public. I know I'm not the first to do this. I'm wondering if anyone else has come up with better information.

Thanks

Tobin

Re: Powder coat wheels

I work with a guy that does powdercoating at home (also does it at work). He
did my VFR wheels for me and they turned out fine. I think his oven bakes
them at 350 degrees or something, but they are only in there for 15 minutes.
He says the wheels probably aren't getting over 275 or 300 degrees in that
short of time which won't do anything to the aluminum make-up.

If you are interested in contacting him, he does a set (front and rear) for
$100 plus shipping in just about any color you want. He can also do the
center part of your rotors for $15 each (I changed mine from gold to black),
or anything else you want that will fit in a 4' X 4' X 6' oven.

E-mail me off the list if you want his contact info.

Ken

Does that include stripping or bead blasting the wheels?

Re: Powder coat wheels

Dunno if it's good or bad...but I had my wheels done about 8 years ago.
No broken or bent wheels, yet.

C

BTW - brake fluid and powder coating does NOT mix - be careful!

Re: Powder coat wheels

Yes, that includes stripping them. I knocked out my bearings, seals, valve stems, and removed the rotors, but he did the stripping, powdercoating, and clearcoating.

RE: Powder coat wheels

FWIW, I had my wheels powdercoated back in 2001 and haven't had an issue
since.

RE: Powder coat wheels

There is a local company here that does it for $75 dollars a wheel so
it's relatively cheap. My main concern is if it weakens the wheel. Lots
of people and lots of powder coating places say it's fine. Here are 2
articles that say don't do it and one that seems to say it's mostly OK.
It seems that powder coating is the most popular option.

Re: Powder coat wheels

I powder coated the wheels (silver) on my '98 VFR shortly after buying it in
1998, but did not clear coat them. Over the next seven years and 24,000+
miles (more than a few at triple-digit speeds) I had no problems with the
structural integrity of the wheels, although as someone pointed out yesterday,
they were quite vunerable to brake fluid - and to aggresive tire changing . . .

just recently a 1974 BMW R90/6, but (sadly) no longer "a '98 VFR with more shit
on it than you can shake a stick at . . . "
