AutoCom Trunk Mounting?

Finally upgrading my Chatterbox units with a new AutoCom. Had planned on
continuing to use my tankbag as the location, but after reading the manual,
I am thinking a bit about permanent mounting on the bike.

Question for you AutoCom vets...is trunk mounting really viable? In other
words is the system really good enough to use without having access to the
knobs?

Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated....

Thanks

Re: AutoCom Trunk Mounting?

Yes. After 6 years of use on my old one ... although mine is in my tank bag
along with radar, music, CB etc. So I can remove easily at stops/for the
night and transfer easily between bikes ...

I have had mine mounted under the seat for a couple of years with power from
the tail light circuit. The only time I have needed to access it was to reseat
a jack plug which had come loose. There is only one knob on a Pro-7 and it has
not needed adjustment after the initial setup.

RE: AutoCom Trunk Mounting?

I have mine located in place of the tool bag under the seat, and run the
wires up to put the radio in the tank bag where I can get to the radio
knobs. Other than the VOX sensitivity and on the newer ones, the volume
gain, there is really nothing to touch ... and these generally stay at the
same setting once you set it up. I wrap the unit with stuff like the sell
to cushion tool box drawers and hold throw rugs in place (kind of a weave
effect with holes to breath), to protect it from shock loads, and put a
plastic bag over it for extra rain/water protection. For power I just have
a plug system to disconnect it from the battery ... just never got back to
move it to a relay controlled circuit, and it lets me use the unit when the
key is off (minimal power draw when the radio is off, so it can go several
days...or longer... without draining the battery).

Best to try to locate it where you can get enough slack on the cables going
to the helmet and radio. I've also seen a remote antenna used by screwing a
lead on in place of the radio antenna.

YMMV

Carl
