Re: Good News, Bad News, Ad Infinitum...

Old gas can probably go to your local AutoZone and get mixed in with their recycled oil. I usually try to at least mix it with a bit of old oil so it looks black.

For cleaning adhesive, there's always WD40 and/or any vegetable oil. Neither should harm the paint. Not sure about Goo-Gone.

Good News, Bad News, Ad Infinitum...

Good news is, I'm getting ready to take my '97 for its longest adventure
since I put a platinum band on my finger seven years ago. Planning to
leave next Monday. Took things apart a bit to clean up all the
accessory wiring, trash my old alarm and install a Scorpio setup, give
things a look over.

Bad news is I found a gas leak. Seems the bottom of my tank rusted from
the inside? Crap, I thought this only happened to '70s CB -series
bikes. Sheesh, what lousy timing.

Good news is, a friend of mine had a spare! From the outside it looks
great, hope the inside is just as good. It's been sitting for three
years with two gallons of gas in it, so I'm nervous. Any good advice?
i.e. where to dump two gallons of old gas, and what to check/replace on
the replacement tank and how?

More good news is that the replacement has a tank protector on it. Bad
news is, the protector is a thick ugly piece of crap with holes that do
nothing for style but lots for trapping dirt, that is decaying and must
come off. Thinking of helping it off using Goo-Gone. Will that hurt my
paint? Any better ideas?

Thanks,
-Brad

I always dump old motorcycle/mower gas in my car's tank. It doesn't
seem to mind :> Probably doesn't hurt that it's mixed in with 16
gallons of newer gas when I do that.

Try heating the tank protector with a heat gun or blow dryer to soften the glue.

That's right.

The best use for old gasoline is weedkiller for the weeds that grow in the cracks of your sidewalk. And it's environmentally responsible, since gas comes from oil, and oil comes from the ground....

If the fire Marshall knew that Autozone was storing gasoline (with a
dash of oil) in gallon milk jugs he'd probably lock their doors.
You're presenting them with a very dangerous condition. Apparently,
they haven't blown up yet, but if they ever do, you had better hope that
nobody tracks down this email thread and sues or prosecutes you.

Okay, I'll bite. I was neither trolling nor kidding (but now that you
mention it, it would a great one....AND, I managed to put WD 40 in the
same email, which is always good for some banal postings). I don't see
what's stupid about it. Maybe I'm missing something. Is it the fire
hazard issue?

For what its worth in this discussion,......... Autozone uses big steel containment tanks for their recycled oil program. And,...... I have put gas in our steel oil container here at the shop that i work at several times. I asked the guy that pumps out the waste oil if it was okay, and he said it was. Afterall, it is a petrolium product.

Re: Good News, Bad News, Ad Infinitum...

Actually, they don't store it in gallon milk jugs- they store it in a
big metal container... don't we all store gasoline in plastic
containers for the mower, etc.? Granted, not plastic milk jugs, but
plastic just the same.

RE: Good News, Bad News, Ad Infinitum...

Definitely a bad idea to put a flammable liquid (gas) in a container and
building only rated to store combustible liquids (oils). Ed is right in
that if the fire marshal were to find out they were accepting contaminated
oil the doors would be locked and they would probably have a big fine, and
possibly the end to free oil drop off. In some communities the fire
marshal will be looking for things like that.

This comes from experience working with the fire marshals for 4 years while
doing a fuel/oil storage facility project. Big difference in how oil and
gas is viewed. Mixed it becomes a hazardous waste.

No it isn't!!!!

Much of it will evaporate, increasing air pollution. That which soaks
into the ground may eventually make it into the water table, contaminating
drinking water.

Yeah, you go ahead and laugh about it.

But I guarantee that there is at least one person, on the list now or in the future
reading the archives, who will quote that post to somebody else "I was reading on
the Internet that it is environmentally OK to dump gas on the ground". If they
want to be stupid in ways that only affects them, fine by me. But stupidity that
pollutes my drinking water I cannot leave alone.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the average person.

Never.

Apparently, some people don't understand humor...

A lot of stuffed shirts on this thread already. Personally, I take my
old oil, and oil contaminated with gasoline and feed my pet California
Condors and Bald Eagles. They love the stuff and come begging for
more! Sometimes they get sick and die for some odd reason so I drop
them down the old well in back -the one I use to throw away all my old
alkaline batteries and old Mercury thermostats for the past 40 years.
This is the same well I use to get rid of the snail darters that have
infestated the woodpecker holes on my house after I shot all of them...

Perhaps I underestimated the stupidity of the list? No, I don't think so.

Nevertheless, some of you guys are easy!

My post was a joke of course (at least Dan got it!), but I don't think small
amounts of gas spilled matter much in the grand scheme of things. We should
be much more concerned with the pollution (and subsequent contamination of
the drinking water) created from 10 million commuters using the L.A.
freeways (as only one example) as we speak....

Never mind telling me every small amount counts....... we all know
that......

Just my .02 cents...... gotta go kill the weeds now.

RE: Fw: Good News, Bad News, Ad Infinitum...

Stupidity, maybe not, but you may have underestimated the sensitivity of
some to spilled gasoline.

If memory serves me correctly, there are areas in California that are having
their wells shut down due to contamination from MTBE and other things from
gasoline. That is affecting many lives.

Sometimes it is safer to talk religion and politics than environmental
issues. Funny how some things change.
