NVFRC - Route planning advice - Toronto
I have a trip to the Twin Cities coming up. And I'm toying with
getting there the long way, via Parry Sound, Sault-Ste.-Marie and then around Lake Superior. (I did the Michigan route, via the UP a couple years ago.) I'll ride north to Buffalo, then into Ontario. I'd like to not ride through Toronto, so looking for alternate routes through Southern Ontario. Any advice appreciated. -- Paul in DC _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

Re: NVFRC - Route planning advice - Toronto
Paul,
Two years ago I did something like this and had a pretty good time of it. >From here to Buffalo through central PA and NY is really quite nice as I think you know. Once I crossed over things got a little gritty. Southern Ontario is quite flat and densely populated. The QEW freeway takes you straight to (but shunts you around) Hamiltom where you can pick up RT 6 and take it all the way to Tobermory and the ferry to Manitoulin Island. You miss Toronto by quite a few miles (oops! kilometers) but there's still a lot of traffic and stop lights, etc. As you move north the country side opens up and gets more interesting (to me, anyway) with small towns and farms (still flat and straight). The ferry only runs four times a day (I think) so you have to plan accordingly. Once on Manitoulin Island things are quite nice, a little elevation change and some sweepers, low traffic. Then your on 17 (Trans Canada) headed west toward Sault Ste. Marie. Wide open road, some sweep, a little up and down, low traffic, some nice views of Huron. Some locals told me that the side trip up through Elliot Lake and back down to 17 a little further on was interesting but I didn't have time to do it. I reentered US at SSM to visit freinds in MI but would have liked to go over the top of Superior. I presume that is your plan. You could stop in Duluth and get measured up for a 'stich. Hope you have a good trip.
