Re: vfr Digest, Vol 28, Issue 12

Paul, since you're planning to go the long way 'round, you best bet is
to cross into Canada at the East end of Lake Ontario, then enjoy the
fine riding available from there to Parry sound. I know I have a
couple of routes (stashed somewhere on the hard drive) from the border
to Parry Sound + another from Silver Spring Md to the border. Let me
know if you're interested. The site that would have helped you to
build your own "best road" route across southern Ontario seems to have
gone off the net.

| Hehe, seriously tho, since the Honda stuff disappeared from the
shelves
| here and one shop I stopped in yesterday said "no more but /here's
| something just as good/" {and twice the price, for some no-name
white
| label thing, yawn, damnit I really hate sales people}, and since
stuff
| like S100 sells for twice as much too, I just mail-ordered some more
| Honda stuff from Honda Direct Line (dot com) at $4.25 per. Easy way
| out, and cheap. Not that I don't like using far-off shops as random
| reasons to ride, but at $3.19 for regular I'm starting to choose my
| fights.
|
| Actually since it's so damn hot here I've been catching up on
reading
| motorcycle magazines, watching the racing on Speed, and buying stuff
| on-line. I should have a nice red Joe Rocket Phoenix 4.0 in a few
days.
| After twenty-five New York City summers sweltering in full-weight,
black
| H-G leathers, that will be a welcome addition to my closet. And I
got a
| couple of Condor helmet hangers - one for home and one for the
office.
|
| I began to realize I should stop when I started checking out the
bling.

| The story goes like this....17 states have banned Honda Polish for
either
| the presence of a material, or the excessive percentage of that
material (I
| wasn't clear on this.). Honda is supposedly working on a new
formulation.
| Honda still sells it in the other states and I believe you can still
buy it
| from places like Servicehonda.com and ronayres.com. This story has
been
| confirmed by local dealers (so not internet lore.)
|
| As far it's cleaning/polish ability versus others, I use it more as
a UV
| protectant. We have a 9 year old Pontiac Montana that has never
been waxed,
| but has been doused with many cans of Honda Polish over the years.
The
| local Pontiac dealer joked that they couldn't tell it apart from new
| vehicles in the parking lot when I had it in for servicing a few
months ago.

|
| Having had both now for a while, I definitely prefer the RVF. In
| theory, the CBR should have more HP because it has an inline-4
instead
| of a V4, but since both bikes were restricted to about 56hp, the
better
| mid-range of the RVF's V4 is definitely preferable. Plus, the bike
is
| lighter, feels lighter, has better ergos, feels thinner... Is more
trick
| with a single sidearm, adjustable suspension. I imagine if the
CBR400RR
| had kept being developed and we had one on par with a modern 600RR
or
| 1000RR it would be killer, but that didn't happen. I haven't ridden
a
| ZXR-400 or GSXR-400, but I can definitely say with the Honda's, I
prefer
| to the RVF.
|
| Anyway, my unsolicited opinion, but I thought I'd share it since I
have
| both bikes and this is the VFR/RVF section. I've never ridden the
RVF's
| predecessor, the VFR400 but I know some people prefer it to the RVF.
|
| Shameless plug: check out my site and go to the sportbikes section
and
| check out my 'grey' bikes collection -- I've updated it and just
| recently added a CBR250RR (man that was hard to find, but with the
| aftermarket pipe and it revving to 19k (reportedly 18k on the dyno))
it
| sounds like an indy car. No torque, of course, but a fun bike
| nonetheless.
|
| I still love my 2-strokes, and probably still prefer a de-restricted
| NSR250 MC28 to the RVF400, but not by much -- of the 'grey' 90s
bikes,
| the RVF400 is definitely one of my favorites.
|
| Anyway, most of you talk about the newer bikes, and I don't blame
you,
| but as a collector of rare 90s grey bikes, and having gotten my RVF
| running recently, I wanted to share my thoughts about it, especially
vs.
| the CBR400RR. There aren't a lot of comparisons out there and they
| seemed mixed -- to me, there is no comparison -- the CBR is a boat
vs.
| the RVF.

|
| I'm no expert, but I think it's generally considered true that you
can
| get more HP from an inline-4 than a v-4, but the v-4 has more
torque.
| Look at a CBR1000RR vs. the RC51 or the Ducatis. If I'm wrong,
please
| explain -- I am definitely no expert on internal combustion engines
and
| the pluses and minues of engine configuration (V, inline, flat,
etc.).
|
| I do know I'm not just feeling more torque and mid-range on the
RVF --
| I've seen the dyno of an RVF400 and CBR400RR and you can see the
| different power bands.

|
| Of course, on the newer bikes, its in-line 4 vs. v2, and so the
extra HP
| is due to the # of cylinders of course. Like I said, I've never
ridden
| a modern RC51 to see how I like it vs. a modern CBR1000RR (which I
have
| ridden -- an '05 a friend of mine has). All I'm saying is 1.
| subjectively I like the RVF400 better than the CBR400RR and 2. I
would
| assume you could get higher revs and therefore more HP from the
CBR400RR
| were it not restricted.
