WDGAH - the pleasures of route planning

Almighty Listers of the Northeast,

Now entering the final phase of childlike anticipation of the pleasures of
WDGAH. In this endorphin adled state, I'm pouring over the maps looking at
various ways to get from here to there. No problem finding entertainment
north through PA to the environs of Binghamtom/Hancock NY.

Last year we took NY 10 to NY 8, over to Lake George and up to the
Ticonderoga Ferry. Then across to W. Lebanon. This year looking at
alternatives and would appreciate local knowledge.

Generally speaking, I'm wondering about including the following routes from
Hancock:

CR 47 through Catskill Park - Is it paved? Is it worthwhile?
NY 23A and 23 to MA 23
MA 8 and 8A to VT 100
VT 100 to....

All insights welcome.

Eyes straining,

Richard Ronay

Re: WDGAH - the pleasures of route planning

Richard:

I share the same gleeful anticipation as you as I find myself peeking at
maps in between meetings throughout the day as I consider my route from
Hudson to Maine and then to West Leb.

Thank you for reminding me... The good section of 23A is closed between
Tannsersville and Palenville. Info here:
www.dot.state.ny.us/reg/r1/rte_23a/rte_23a.html

I'll suggest the following as a base route, that you can modify as you
see fit or as others suggest, or ignore it altogether :)

-From Hancock (gas up here), Rt 17 to 30. 30 around the Pepacton
reservoir = good, then it gets Rt. 10ish where you can make good time
without getting the least bit bored.
-Head East on Rt. 23 at Grand Gorge. Again, a nice scenic road where you
can make good time. Unfortunately, with 23A closed, you will need to
suffer about 8 miles of the slab section East of where 23 meets 145.
Warning: This section is heavily patrolled.
-Cross the Hudson on 23 via the Rip VanWinkle bridge (yes the old
sleeping mountain man of lore). $1 toll. Be sure to note Olana on the
top of the mountain.
-9G North after the bridge will take you into Hudson. It doesn't look
like much coming in, but Warren street (2nd or 3rd light, make a right)
has many good eating options. Otherwise, stay on 23 to 9H North to avoid
the lower speed limits.
-9H North to 66 East.
-66 East to 295
-295 to 22 North.
-22 to 43 N/E (at Stephentown) into MA
-43 to 2 East. North Adams isn't as bad as it looks on the Map.
-Rt 2 over the summit (WATCH the hairpin)
-LEFT onto Zoar road at the Deerfield River (12.5 miles from the
hairpin) like)>to Rt. 100 at Readsboro.
-100 North to 100A
-100A to 4 East
-4 East to I-89 East to the Fireside.

The above is 308 miles from Hancock to West Lebanon.

Option 1:
-28 East from 30 at Margaretville to 28A
-28A around the south side of the Ashokan reservoir and then 28 east again
-28 to 199 across the Hudson on the Kingston - Rhinecliff Bridge, $1 toll.
-199 to Rt 9 North to 9H.

This brings total mileage up to 327 but will be a bit more fun.

Option 2:
-295 to into MA (instead of taking 22 North)
-295 to 41
-41 to 20
-20 to 9 (Pittsfield does look as bad as it does on the map)
-9 to 8A (8A makes Pittsfield worth it)
-8A to Hawley Rd at Savoy
-Hawley Road to 8A at West Hawley
-8A to Rt. 2, turn right and then left onto Zoar Road.

Total mileage with this option is 302.

Enjoy!

-Mike

Re: WDGAH - the pleasures of route planning

Richard,
Seems like excellent advice from Mike (and I plan on
making use of it myself coming or going - thx Mike!)
but to answer one of your specific questions:
> CR 47 through Catskill Park - Is it paved? Is it

worthwhile?
Yes and Yes. And if you see a red and yellow VFR
pairing along that way Friday, wave hello to Pat and
I.

Cheers,
Greg

RE: WDGAH - the pleasures of route planning

MA 23 is a great road, but has been infested with tar snakes
lately. Still worth it if you've never been. Can be busy on
the weekend; expect a Trooper on those days...

8A north from Plainfield is narrow, tight and rough in some
spots, but little traffic. You won't be bored on either.
