RE: vfr Digest, Vol 29, Issue 22

Re R1100 S
I just finished 4000 miles on one through Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah
and Arizona which was an incredible trip. I chose this bike over my VFR
mainly because of the luggage accroutrements, webbing options, etc. Although
I agree on the vibration issues on the lower end and lack of acceleration my
VFR has, I must say I was pretty comfortable at speeds over 70 on up if you
know what I mean. Most of all I felt very reassured in the rain, I
think/feel the horizontal heads have a stabilizing effect and once you are
are in a turn and set up it holds true nicely. The VFR has it on lots of
twisties because it feels infinitely more agile. However I ride behind a
superlative rider who has an R1200 S and an older Boxer Cup and this guy
routinely smokes people on turns so there you go. The seat on the Beemr sits
better too for the rider because the front is narrow so you can really scoot
forward and lock onto your tank when you need it. I'm keeping both and am
considering getting the GS for my dream trip to Tierra del Fuego sometime.

Have a great day

Ps I wrote once asking for info on the 96 vs 97 models. I sold my 96 and got
a97 and boy could I tell the difference. 97 had a lot more pop, anyone have
any ideas?

No, not mine.I stoped by the Kawasaki dealer today to check the out ZX-14
and they had an 98 VFR for sale. It was a one owner with 8000 miles on it
that the owner traded in on a atv. I didn't get a chance to drive it or hear
it run but it looked in good shape.I didn't see any cracks in the plastic or
tears in the seat, but I did notice the passenger grab handles were missing.
They are asking $4400 for it, which sounds reasonable to me. If anybody is
interested contact me off list and I'll go by take a closer look. Bike is
located at Shreveport Motorsports in Shreveport,La.
I have no afliation with dealer yadayadayada

Richard,
Seems like excellent advice from Mike (and I plan on
making use of it myself coming or going - thx Mike!)
but to answer one of your specific questions:
> CR 47 through Catskill Park - Is it paved? Is it

worthwhile?
Yes and Yes. And if you see a red and yellow VFR
pairing along that way Friday, wave hello to Pat and
I.

Cheers,

Back in January, a vendor at the Vancouver motorcycle show offered this
fairing repair kit:
http://www.quarical.com/Fairing.html

In February I used one to fix several broken tabs on my '92 VF750's rear
fairing. Six months & 7K miles later the repair is holding - that's a
big improvement on previous attempts that failed as soon as I tried
remounting the fairing!

Hey all,

Bad news first: I crashed my VFR. Getting on the freeway, look behind me to
check for traffic and did not pay attention to a diesel spill in front of
me. Was going about 45 mph. I'm fine, gear worked good, bike is scratched
and front-end is pretty twisted. For anybody who wants more details/pictures

e-mail me...

Well, here is my question: I can get a very good deal on a 2001 BMW R1100S,
but my wife is not here for the pillion ride test, so can anybody here give
me a comparison from the passenger's point of view between a 1998 VFR800 and

a 2001 BMW R1100S ??
We do one extended trip per year 2 up, so that aspect is important to me.

Thank you all,

Olivier

I have a 99 VFR and have ridden a R1100S.
The 1100S feels like the paint shaker machine at Home Depot compared to the
smoothness of the VFR. After doing 4K mile trips on the VFR, I cannot
imagine doing the same thing on the 1100S. I should also note that I have
owned and enjoyed several BMW's (K12LT, R1150GS, etc), so I am not anti-BMW.
But I know VFR's and the 1100S is no VFR.

""Josh, the Blue Ridge Parkway is, in my opinion, the nicest mc road in the
east. I have ridden it bottom to top and back twice and will do it again
later this year or next.

I say the road is great for several reasons. First, the scenery is
magnificant, second the road is one constant twisty and third, the surface
is perfect. The warnings about speeding and huge tickets are valid BUT the
parkway is patrolled by the National Park Service and their budget has been
cut so much lately that they have almost no rangers on the BRP during the
week. I discussed this with a ranger over lunch on my last trip and he
confirmed my observation. He said they have little traffic during the week
and that on the entire 450 miles of the parkway that there may not be more
than 1 or 2 NPS enforcement people on it at any given time during the week.
They come out in force on the weekends however.

The last time I rode it was on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
My buddy and I saw one NPS enforcement vehicle the entire way up the parkway
and half way back down. On that last Saturday, however, we saw a number of
them. One was ahead of us driving right at 45 mph (and holding everyone up
behind him) and stayed on the parkway for over 60 miles. The last day was
frustrating and slow but the other days we rode well over the posted limit a
LOT of the time. Up in Virginia where the road is less tight we sometimes
approached 2X of the limit. Were we taking a risk of getting a huge ticket
doing so? You bet we were.... but we didn't. Life is a calculated risk.
If you go mid week and use common sense, I think you can ride it at a pace
that is fun without much risk... but there is some. Don't send your ticket
to me if you get one but I thought I would share my experience and
observations with you. I personally think the road is worth the risk.
Unless you
are trying to substitute the BRP for a track day, I think you can enjoy 90%
of it never riding over 60.

Next time I go I am going to go up during the week and come back on public
highways on the weekend. I think I can chart a return that will be good as
well.

Hope this helps.
Vic""

You forgot 2 important benefits of the parkway:
1. NO commercial traffic allowed..which means no semi's, trucks ,etc.
2. Limited access, which means no driveways, intersections (ok, a few do
exist)...but otherwise you don't have to worry about intersecting
traffic...what you DO have to watch for is people pulling out of or into the
numerous turnoffs and scenic overlook areas. I almost bit it when some
moron without warning turned left into one of these as I was passing.

There are always bikes wanting to fly on that road, so my advice is to wait
until a group goes by and roll in behind them...let them run interference
for you. Keep an eye on their brake lights, and always use a radar
detector...you should be fine...or "fined"! Last time I rode it, I followed
a dude on a Kawa 636...and kept on his bumper...me with loaded givi bags!
He pulled off after a while and seemed really pissed! I must admit I was
hanging way off the bike, while he never moved off the seat...could be
because he never tried that before? But it is the closest thing to a
racetrack you can get, without going there!

MA 23 is a great road, but has been infested with tar snakes
lately. Still worth it if you've never been. Can be busy on
the weekend; expect a Trooper on those days...

8A north from Plainfield is narrow, tight and rough in some
spots, but little traffic. You won't be bored on either.

Sorry to keep this on-list, but it's the best way of reaching the masses for

I have a room but no roomate for WDGH. IF anyone else is in same situation,
we
can combine and give one of our rooms to Nate. Feel free to ping me off

For God's sake, guys, when you do go on the parkway, don't act like a squid
and ruin it for the rest of us. All it will take is a couple of sportbike
incidents/crashes and they'll step up enforcement, lower the speed limits,
or who knows what else. The Parkway is plenty entertaining at or a little
above the speed limit, and if you want to go faster do it away from
traffic---there are lots of spots you can see far ahead and that is the time

to nail it. Although I've doubled the speed limit and more up there, those

times have been few and far between. Most bikes I've seen up there are
cruisers(can't bring myself to say the "H" word) and they generally are
doing just that. I don't see a great many sportbikes, most were behaving
themselves, but I have seen a few acting like it was their personal
racetrack. Those guys will find themselves grille ornaments on an RV or
some other gawker taking in the scenery rather than keeping in their lane
around a curve. Another hazard I seem to be seeing more of lately is
bicyclists. Don't get me wrong, I love bicycling and do it all the time,
but I wouldn't get on the Blue Ridge on one for anything. I have come
around a corner more than once and found one or more of them right in the
middle of my lane; I could slow down from the speed limit--barely in
time--but if I'd been going faster it would have gotten ugly. Good luck,
