FW: Avon Tire deal...through September

The Vipers are an all new tire for Avon this year. The old Azaros were
"shite" according to a lot of people. It got a good non-comparative
review by Motorcyclist magazine IIRC. They can't be all that bad for
$166 total. Of course if RRworld puts them in their tire comparison
this year it would be a great way to really give them a full evaluation.
Probably won't happen, but you never know. I took a chance on the
Pirelli Stradas too using their buy one get one free gimmik...wasn't
disappointed. These are for the VFR and not for the track...

Going to order tickets in two days...using some of my Amex to get the
tickets. Flying into Oakland and leaving from Oakland. I'm thinking of
taking the redeye from Oakland to Pittsurgh on Wed evening (I need to
see what flights leave an when). Wondering if I need to keep the rental
car to drive up to THill or if we ride together? I'll check on flight
times in the meantime.

How's the arrangements going?

Other stuff from their website:
"They just refuse to slide - on any bike." - Adam Child, MCN 23 Feb 2005

"On bikes like the CBR600RR, on this track, on this day, these tyres
seemed un-crashable." - Jonathan Pearson, Superbike, May 2005
.. "Very stable." - Paul Swift, Bike, April 2005
"For a performance road tyre, it's hard to imagine anyone needing more."
- Warren Pole, T.W.O., May 2005

Avons' new Viper Sport and Supersport tyres have been tested by four of
the UK's leading motorcycle titles and have been accorded praise of the
highest level.

Journalists from MCN, Superbike, Bike and T.W.O. attended the European
launch of Viper at the Catalunya GP circuit near Barcelona, Spain in
February.

The tyres were tested on a variety of bikes which together clocked up
around 3,000 miles on one of the world's fastest and demanding circuits.

Adam Child from MCN was the first to print with his report under the
headline, "Unslideable Avons" Adam went on to say, "The standard tyres
are more than enough for the track and the Supersport compound is almost
faultless. They just refuse to slide - on any bike."

Superbike's tyre expert Jonathan Pearson admitted to being a little
sceptical before the launch but after his first outing he reported
'astonishing grip levels' that allowed him to attack corners with
surprising confidence. He went on to write, "Carry too much corner speed
and crank the bike over with more than the usual amount of force to keep
the bike on line and, again, nothing untoward happens, just continuous,
predictable, even grip."
By the end of the day Jonathan was prepared to make what he called one
of his biggest claims ever made as a tester of bikes or tyres saying,
"On bikes like the CBR600RR, on this track, on this day, these tyres
seemed un-crashable."

Paul Swift of Bike magazine, tested the tyres on a variety of bikes
including supersports 600s and 1000s, a Suzuki Bandit1200 and Honda
VFR800. "The tyre worked really well at high speed," Swifty remarked.
"Very stable." He continued, "Despite the full force of the 1000cc
machines to play with, I never had a single moment out there."

T.W.O. sent TV presenter and road tester Warren Pole to Catalunya and he
was determined to give the Vipers a thorough test.
"For my first session," said Warren, "I grabbed a Suzuki Bandit 1200
shod with the Sport tyres just to get back into the groove. And it was
impressive. The Bandit protested, the frame flexed, most things decked
out at some point or another and the brakes faded. The tyres however,
remained unfazed. For a performance road tyre, it's hard to imagine
anyone needing more."

Looking to 'up the ante' Warren then headed out on a Honda CBR600RR
fitted with Supersports. "Once again," wrote Warren, "I struggled to
find fault. They never once let go despite my best efforts to upset
them, the bike remained composed, the steering was sweet and I was
impressed."
In conclusion he stated, "All in all, Avon's Vipers were some pretty
impressive tyres. The Sports can easily take track antics in their
stride while the Supersports will do all that while giving you a little
more grip and confidence into the bargain."

Available now, Viper builds upon the success of previous Avon ranges and
offers a wider choice of sizes and a host of improved technologies.

Subject: Re: Avon Tire deal...through September

I've had a negative experience with Avon's.
Buddy of mine tried a pair of Assaro's (I think) 2 years ago and he
hated them.
I rode his 929 and also felt they offered very little grip and inspired
zero confidence.
They felt as if they were sliding a lot more than I like. And I have no
problem sliding around.
(just look at my performance last WDGAH)

My friend also did 2 track days on these POS's (pieces of shit for
those not in the lingo-loop).
Conversely, they offered great lifespan. Even after the trackdays @
ThunderHill.

IMHO, spend the extra $20-$50 and buy a good/great set of tires.
I've historically bought Dunlops 208's for $190 delivered and Pilots for
$225.
Worth every frikin' cent. Think we're skimping on the wrong things...

I bought a rear 180 section ViperSport rear from Southwest Moto
Tires for $148 shipped, and I'm planning on getting the front for free
+$18 shipping. (Avon deal:
http://www.avonmoto.com/contests/contest.asp
through the month of
September)

These are more sport-oriented, but I'll take what I can get for
$166 total for two tires! Not a bad deal...

FYI

I'll keep everyone posted on how they fit, ride and wear.
