tapping

I have 25,000 miles on the VFR. Occasionally it provides a tapping sound that goes away as engine RPM increases to 2000. It does not always seem to occur. It comes and goes. The previous owner assured me that it had its valves set in the shop. It seems like it could be a single valve tapping. does anyone have some inputs on this? When coming to a stop, it may.... or may not.... occur.

Does it go away if you squeeze the clutch lever?

RE: tapping

There that's the magic question. Basket rattle and it's normal on any VFR
with reasonable milage.

Kev~

Can you please explain this "basket rattle" a little more for those of us
who slept through class? :)

The clutch in your VFR (and many other motorcycles) uses many clutch
plates. one set is splined on the inside, the other on the outside.
The inner splines engage the clutch center (which is directly
attached to the engine) and the outer splines (on that other set of
plates) engages the clutch "basket". That basket is geared on the
outside and drives the transmission.

Because the fit of the plate splines to the basket isn't perfect,
when the bike is in neutral it will rattle. It can rattle under
certain other conditions (e.g. if the basket is excessively worn, but
with only 15k miles on the VFR, this is _extremely_ unlikely) as
well. The rattle goes away when you squeeze the clutch lever because
that disconnects the basket from the vibrations transmitted by the
engine.

In my 90-96VFR750 manual, the diagram is on p. 9-5. The basket is #8,
and the center is #9.

Be glad you don't have a dry clutch!

Everyone says that people buy Ducati's for the sound, isn't this what
they're talking about?

My K100RS had a single plate dry clutch...I didn't
recall it making anywhere near as much noise as my VFR
does.

I don't really know much about it, since all my motorcycles have had
wet clutches. I do know that lots of folks mention the rattle of
Ducati's clutches. I'd guess that a dry single-plate clutch (which
IIRC most BMW motorcycles have) would rattle less than a multi-plate
clutch. Ducati's current range is full of dry multi-plate clutches,
so that's my guess.

I also know that I forgot to put a smiley in the last post. :-)

Re: tapping

My BMW's clutch never rattled. Even when it exploded. :)
