Re: Update 1: Muffler Modification 2002+ - Need the help of the list
I have a friend who removed the baffles from the mufflers on his 02 VFR.
I think the basic procedure is: - remove the mufflers from the bike. - remove all heat shields from the mufflers. - cut off the end of the mufflers with a saw. - use a hammer and a large cold chisel to remove everything inside the cans. - weld the ends back on to the mufflers. - reassemble. It is louder that stock, but not obnoxious. Not sure if it did anything for performance. There is some heat induced discoloration on the end caps that wasn't present before, but it's not bad. I took off the exhaust all together last night. The catalectic converters provide enough back pressure and the sound is great. I would still like to get the exhaust out to the back but if gutting the cans sounds anything like this, wow. It sounds like a stock car. I am digging through the VFR Discussion site for info on the modification with the stock exhaust, but the links so far I have found are broken. But this is a good start. If you have your old mufflers after putting on your slip-on, ping me at VFR@xxxxxx. Thank you to everyone for their help and suggestions so far. There are those of us who are interested in the muffler modification effort more so than bickering over whether we think "loud Pipes save lives etc. etc." I personally love the sound of the VFR, and would love to see a good clean way of getting a little more sound performance out of the stock exhaust system. The idea of 600+ dollar aftermarket systems is ludicrous IMO, and some of the mods I have seen on line in the past, have been a bit extreme. I would like to see a little better method of doing the can mod. Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
