6th gen VFR, what mileage are you getting?

Hey folks. Im new here, just joined after picking up an 03 VFR last
week. I actually subscribed once before a few years ago when I had my
VF500 but I didnt post much.

Anyway, Im wondering what kind of gas mileage you guys are getting on
your bikes.

Re: 6th gen VFR, what mileage are you getting?

I routinely get ~40mpg around town. the worst i've ever gotten was
35mpg and that was 2-up, full hard luggage loaded to the gills and
whacking the right grip hard in the twisties.

I've seen over 60mpg on the hwy at a very steady 65mph and no bags.

Thanks for replying. Ive only had this bike for about 3 weeks and so
far Im only getting 28mpg on mostly highway miles (admittedly fast) and
Im trying to figure out why. Im used to getting 40 mpg on my CBR 600.

Tire pressures good?
How about chain slack?
Clutch slipping?

You got a power commander on there?
Are the O2 Sensors installed and working?

That's just a semi-random list of stuff that might affect it. I'm
sure that others can (and will) contribute more comprehensive
suggestions.

might also check your fuel filter. I know when mine clogged (oddly at
~4k mi) it ran like a dog and fuel mileage dropped like a rock.

Re: 6th gen VFR, what mileage are you getting?

Yikes, a comment about a power commander. I bought my 2002 with a power
commander and am only getting about 35mpg in all types of riding. Best I
got is 40 mpg going down a mountain pass so I was idling quite a bit. I
know nothing about a power commander so I need some help removing it. Maybe
that will help my mileage.

35-40 depending on how often I wind out the tach.

Re: 6th gen VFR, what mileage are you getting? Power Commander

I also had a dramatic loss of fuel economy after installing a Power Commander. It turns out the Honda fuel map is quite lean in the under 7000 range, and, most custom maps only concern themselves with making power in the upper ranges. What I found is that the custom maps all put far too much fuel into the light throttle cruising RPMs (where we in fact spend the most of our time). After tinkering with the fuel maps, with the aid of a wide band EGO sensor I was able to restore the fuel economy, and maintain the drivability I was looking for when I originally installed the Power Commander.

I'm not sure what mileage I'm getting;
I originally got ~ 350 kM to the tank
dropped to ~ 225 - 250 kM per tank with the Power Commander
now get ~ 350 - 400 kM per tank

I usually fill up at 2 bars showing, 17 - 18 litres.

Removing the Power Commander isn't that difficult. Find it, disconnect both connectors, re-connect the bike harness to the computer. Re-connect the EGO sensors. (which is probably the most time consuming part as you'll need to remove the left side plastic.)

Tires, chain, and clutch are all good. The bike does have an
aftermarket exhaust and a Power Commander installed though. It came
with the bike so I have no idea what type of map is on it but I think
its a custom map from a local shop. Is there a way to copy the existing
map, save it, and try out some other maps to see if they make any
difference?

I wouldn't mess with other maps until after you've eliminated other
possible causes of your mileage issues. The only reasonable way of
changing maps is to get some tuning time with an exhaust gas analyzer
(and someone who knows what they're doing) and generate the map
custom for your bike and riding style. Anything else is the FI
equivalent of buying a random set of carb jets and installing them to
see if that helps; while it might, it might not and there is a very
real possibility of making it worse or (worst case)of damaging the bike.

Were it me, I'd start by running some FI cleaner through the system
and checking your spark plugs. If you get a decent plug reading
you'll be able to determine if the bike is running way rich, and
whether or not all cylinders are in the same ballpark WRT fuel. If
the plugs look different, it's time to look at the electrical system
as well. Pop open your airbox and check the air filter.

Then I'd check for vacuum leaks (e.g. airbox lines all hooked up?
throttle body boots in good shape?), check the condition of your fuel
pump (manual has test for flow rate) and filter.

Finally, consider your riding style. If you're winding the engine up
regularly, cruising at 8krpms, running always with heavy loads, etc.
then you've probably found your issue.

The most likely scenario (barring the existence of symptoms other
than poor fuel economy) though, is that it's some combination of
these things, and that you won't find any one thing that's "the
cause." That means that you won't be sure that you've got things
right without being methodical, patient, and patient.

HTH,
Johnj
