As well, the rear connection to the right side fender is broken, which is
why the tail isn't snuggly fit.

The scuff marks are from my Areostitch roadcrafter suit rubbing against the
fenders. At least, that's my best guess.

Comes with:
8 quarts of Shell Rotella T oil (if you want them)
2 oil filters (15 each from dealer)

Asking $2950.

Opinions Sought...

Background- Riding since 1979. On my second VFR, first was a 1992
that I hit a deer with... Currently riding a very nice clean 1994
with about 29,000 miles on the clock. No problems, aside from floppy
rear plastic... My other daily ride is a 2005 HD Road Glide. My
wife rides as well, HD Sportster and Ninja 650R.

I have been getting the itch for a newer or larger sport touring
bike. Have some lower back disc issues, so an upgright riding
position is a help. Here is where I need more info: What is the
value of going to a newer VFR, probably with hard bags vs what I
have. Have been looking at a used '04 with less than 1k miles.

Also thinking about a new or used ST1300. Would probably spend the
$$ over a ST1100 due to the updates, lighter weight, shorter
wheelbase, more power, etc.

Are there Honda hard bags for the 94-97 VFR? Is the VFR800 that
much better WRT suspension, comfort, weather coverage, performance?

Anybody out there have ST1300 vs VFR experience?

Anybody catch the Motorcycle Consumer News article where they said
and showed that the VTEC claimed changes were not really made by
Honda?

We covered related topics fairly recently in the threads around "Are
VFR riders power-crazed?" in early Sept. There's a _lot_ of stuff
there, most of it good. Looks like the real stuff was posted starting
11 Sept, including posts by Quint Marcaletti, Joe Cargal, JES VFR,
myself, etc. Those couple of days are a perfect example of the
VFRlist at it's best, IMO.

I'd say, based on what you wrote above, that you should consider the
Sprint ST as well as the ST1300. It looks (again, based on the above
and IMO) like the VFR isn't going to do it for you, in terms of
riding position and "larger"ness (i.e. more displacement).

There's no Honda luggage for the '94-7 VFR, aftermarket only I'm
afraid (says the guy with a '94 who is sorta' thinking about hard
luggage once he gets a real job...)

Or you could send your VFR off for a big-bore kit, get the suspension
done at Traxxion, fit heli-bars, and a Sargent seat. It'd be way
cheaper than the newer bike... c'mon, you know you want to! ;-)

Well, if you can wait a bit, your choices will increase. Here are
two that I would consider if I were you.

2007 Triumph Sprint ST, it has higher bars for a more upright seating
postion. Same size/weight as a VFR, but much more power, ABS and
comes with the side bags.

or if you want something with huge power:

2007 Kawasaki GTR1400, it's based on the ZX-14, but has a BMW style
shaft drive. It's reported to be lighter than the FJ1300 by a little
bit and is definately lighter than the ST1300.

Re: Opinions Sought...

Rob,

I haven't wandered into the Concours sites, but there is a lot of
chatter on the ZX-12 and ZX-14 sites about it. I'm not completely
enamored with it. The Sprint ST is more to my liking. If it had a
shaft drive setup like the GTR1400, it would be perfect. Well,
almost. The suspension and brakes need some updating. Other than
that, the Sprint ST is what the VFR should be but isn't. I'm not
sure I like the new higher bars on the 07 Sprint, but I think the 06
bars can be fit without any problems and the 07 has a new, faster,
better, ecu. A local shop to me told me that gutting the cat results
in 1 less HP on the dyno than much louder aftermarket race exhaust
systems and costs a lot less. A big plus is reduced heat, those damn
cats hold the heat. Power on the ST is 125 at the crank, but people
are reporting at least that much with exhaust and ecu tuning at the
rear wheel.

Support your tailpiece!

All,

Not terribly long ago, Rob Randler and I had the following exchange:

I've since tested the removal of the tailpiece and it came off and
went back on again without a hitch. The metal that I used was
1/8" round, almost certainly mild steel, as I bent it by hand and it
didn't break. I suspect that you could fairly easily achieve the same
effect using an aluminum or steel sheet and angle-brackets to bolt
the thing to the unused lugs (a pair on each sideon the rear
subframe, but I'm too lazy to do that now that I've got a working
solution. It has really stabilized the rear end, and seems to have
taken a bunch of stress off of the plastic back there.

I've uploaded some pictures of the mod to my website:
http://mypage.iu.edu/~johajohn/vfr/tail.html

later,
Johnj
