Hi Rob,
Not mentioned as an option was an FJR. The '06 & '07 FJRs are lighter than the ST, cost less, have more HP and torque, come standard w/ABS, have no heat issues (unlike the previous iterations), come standard w/hard side bags (a top trunk is available as an option) and has handlebars that are adjustable to three positions as well as a seat that can be moved to two positions. Considering your back issues, the FJR is most likely to allow you to find a riding position that is more upright and comfortable w/o having to spend money in the aftermarket arena. Additionally, the FJR comes standard w/a centerstand and shaft drive and a 26,600 mile valve adjustment interval.

If you like your VFR but need more comfort for your back, give the FJR a look. They are still out there to be bought and the '07s are coming soon (no change to '06s other than paint color). V/R,
Pat in Monument, CO (had '97 VFR, '00 929, and now '06 FJR)
