Yeah, the "variable" charging is a problem. I hate to say it, but if you keep riding it while you figure
this out the R/R is gonna go. In fact, it may already be too late: I've seen them test fine when cold but freak out in use and eventually die with almost no indication of where they were heading (south!). You NEED to re-wire that thing, and oh yeah, there's the whole wiring harness test, and CLOSELY inspect the connector block between the stator and R/R. Now that the Texas VFR Garage is back up and running, you should have no problem finding assistance with these tests and mods.
