FW: Wow!
Brian,
Been to Monterey, spent time in Carmel, did business in Gilroy, have a sister in-law in Fresno, love Yosemite, a few weeks in San Francisco, and driven by Merced, and ridden Thunder Hill. Do I have the qualifications to render a comment? I imagine it will be even hotter in Merced than Laguna! Should they ever move it (an unlikely thing) this new track might be a MotoGP friendly and safer for the riders -- even with all the improvements Laguna, though a rider's track is tight and technical. I'd like to go to Laguna, or Miller or Barber for a MotoGP and I'd like to see what this new track is going to look like. I'm enamored with the possibilities! We're getting a new track in North Carolina in the next year or so as well as a new one in New Jersey (southern?). While I don't anticipate any of them to be a MotoGP venue, we'll have more choices here too in the near future. I love the fact I'm going to have more choices as a rider and as a spectator...I just wish they'd fix Mid-Ohio up so when the riders punt it they aren't flying into walls or over the edge of a hill... By the way, Monterey is no Carmel! Laguna is still Laguna and it will always be a very cool place--I want to ride there some day! Re: Wow!
I would agree with both of you. Merced is no Monterey and Monterey is no Carmel.
I dated my now wife while she attended UC Monterey Bay, my god sons live in Salinas (who I visit regularly), spent many weekends riding the Hollister dirt, and attended both GPs so far. I hope that's enough to qualify. Attention flamers: the following is strictly an opinion...(bracing for flamage) With silly credentials aside, I must say that I don't think the GP will last in Laguna for much longer (past the contract of course). I hope I'm wrong, but here's what I see. Yes, there is tremendous tradition at the track, by the racers and visitors i.e. the pilgrimage to the track, Cannery Row scene, etc. But the Miller Motorsports track in Utah is by far a more suitable track for Moto GP racing (almost double the size of Laguna). It may not have the character or tradition of Laguna, but it is safer in the eyes of the GP riders. Both years riders have complained about the track. This past year mainly for the freshly laid asphalt, but track layout has been their main concern. Some, like Rossi, insist the track isn't safe. Personally, I take pride in the fact that it's an incredibly tough track to ride fast, and snicker at the Euro riders, but I'm getting better with the therapy. Although sad, I would not be surprised to see the GP moved to Utah. If you followed the AMA Racing last year, you know what I mean. This track looks like Quatar; which I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it does. Great paddock area for the teams, better parking, better seating, I'm guessing cheaper hotels, and of course the huge new flat track with enormous kitty litter run offs. Yes, I know; no corkscrew. I don't think there are too many people who attended the last 2 GPs at Laguna would argue that Red Bull, Yamaha, and Laguna need to keep working on the logistics of the event. And if you were Miller Motorsports, wouldn't you be courting the GP right about now? As the lads say these days "cha ching", or is that out of style now? Anyway, I love Laguna Seca and would hate to see the event moved, but my gut tells me it's better for the GP racers and may make for a faster (MPH wise) race. If anything, we still have the AMA event as an excuse to roll down Cannery Row on Friday night; even if I'm the slowest old guy there. Flame away... Re: Wow!
As someone who has had the opportunity to ride Miller I found the track to
be freaking awesome! Yes it is pretty flat but there is some elevation. Where that elevation is makes it hard as there are more than one set of corners where you can't see the exit until you are at the apex. With it being such a fast track that makes it very interesting. The paddock is huge. The grandstands are great (not enough of them but they are adding them). The area has good weather (it doesn't get extremely hot there but it will stay warm). And the pavement is next to perfect (there is a bumpy area if you are riding the outer course (AMA) before you come into the attitudes. Its only bumpy because the rest of the track is butter smooth. Finally from what I understand Mr Miller does want the top level motorsports events to come to his track. F1 and MotoGP included. Can't wait until this next summer where it seems as though I'll be going back to Miller twice. With a ~850 mile drive each way....that's some serious driving. -Chris On 12/20/06, bktobk3233@xxxxxx > Although sad, I would not be surprised to see the GP moved to Utah.
