Re: and TomTom Rider
How well does the mounting system work?
I thought the oem mounting system was flimsy and I couldn't find a spot on the bars to clamp it to. I have it mounted with a RAM system. The base is mounted to the 2 tank bolts. I have a 5" arm connected to it. You can use a shorter arm but I have tank bag so thats why I'm using such a long arm. I know others who are happy with a 3" arm. Can you see it well enough while riding for it to be useful, or is it just another distraction? I can see it fine most of the time during the day. At night it's super clear. Most of the time I really don't look down at the unit if I'm cruising along. I'm watching the road. It does come with a bluetooth ear piece. I can hear the directions fine. The Tomtom also connects to your cell phone if it has bluetooth. People on the other end of the conversation usually have difficulty hearing me when I'm over 65mph. I guess it's the way i have the mic mounted in my helmet with all that wind noise. What kind of battery life do you get out of it? Expect 4 or 5 hours out of the unit. Are you able to hook it into the bike's charging system? Yes and that's how I have mine set up on my 03 VFR. Is the touchscreen interface workable while wearing riding gloves? With my summer gloves I have no problems. I've tried it with thicker 'winter' gloves and it really doesn't work. I love the TomTom nav software and interface, and if it's worth it, the Rider would make long-distance touring even more enjoyable. A friend of mine has a Nuvi 350 or 550. I don't remember at this time. The tomtom gave better directions than his Garmin.
