RE: Re Why the V4? -- Scotland Memories

Hi Steve,
It is good to see that you are still around. I was recently wondering where
you were with all the reminiscing lately. I'm glad to hear the ride is
still doing you well.

Alan, Karel Vanek and I had a great time touring with you in Scotland. That
was a very memorable trip, thanks to your great planning and guidance. I
still tell stories from that trip. Thank you.

As for why a V4 --- compact engine with good power delivery and a narrow
frontal area; basically a best compromise between an I4 and a V2. You get
the benefits of both, unfortunately, as noted, it is more expensive to
produce and can tend to get large for the larger displacements.

I have owned an American '96 FT since new - (bought it in MD for $7200, half
the UK price then shipped it home that same year when my military tour was
up)... I have done most of my own maintenance and one thing you probably
WONT find with any other motor is that after 69,000 miles or so the inlet
and exhaust clearances were ALL 'spot on' and I mean NO tolerance whatsoever
just spot on! Its as smooth as a baby's butt and returns 200-210 miles per
tank to this day. Just my 2p

On another note I was very saddened to hear of Alan Wilson's passing - I had
the pleasure of escorting him around some the finest roads in Scotland about
10 years ago - Carl Waltzer was there too and another Carl and a Canadian
guy whose name escapes me - but it's like you guys all say - he was a 'real
character' and will be missed by so many... my deepest heartfelt condolences
to those he leaves behind, especially his immediate family.

Steve B UK
