I also do the tank back thing - oriented to match the car windshield position.

One of the things I've found is very important is to be moving fast enough as you pass the transponder. If you just idle up, it almost always fails. If you slow your approach, drop to first, cover the front brake, and then go through at a reasonable clip ( <10mph), it seems to work much better. It's kind of a "charge the gate" approach. If there's an arm, you really need to be covering that front brake, and watch the oil slick....but I've found it makes a big difference.

P.S. Don't forget the transponder is only good for 4-ish years. If yours is older, call them, and get a new one. It's free.
