Trackday at BeaveRun Raceway (Wampum, PA) June 6th.

Went to BeaveRun Raceway on Wed June 6th with my friend Denny Fair and
parked to the left of the scoring tower a little ways down from the
scoring tower. Denny and I were literally the first ones there at 6:40
am. We unpacked his trailer, put up the canopy and got the bikes out
and ready for tech inspection. The only thing I needed after tech
inspection was to check the inflation on the tires (31 psi front and
32psi rear), open up the front forks and turn my cartridge emulators
back a half turn as they were jarring my fillings loose on any large
bump on the street.

I was a little worried, because even though I have had this bike out on
the road a little to test it I really hadn't done much to push it. Plus
the Tomohawk street tires I had on it didn't inspire confidence. That
and I had just done the '03 cam swap and re-jetted (I did test it a
little before hand) so I'm a little wary of things going wrong with the
motor and the feel of "new" tires. Aaron Barry sold me a pair of
Pirelli Supercorsa Pro's from one of his races last year (only one race
on them) in the stock sizes and they went on the rims really
easy...like buttah! I've never run these on the track before so I was
wondering how they felt and how they tipped into a turn.

In general it was a great trackday. Lee's (BMW Motorcycles of Pittsburgh
Dealer sponsored day) guys put on a safe, fun ride. There were enough
control riders to keep order and in all the people that showed up were
all about having a good time rather than "getting their race on". I
followed Mook (WERA racer #93 Scott Rosey) around a little...actually he
let me follow him around and waited for me a lot. It is a nice little
track, pretty technical with some tight turns and difficult transitions
where if you get off line you lose time--especially on a 650cc twin like
mine with only 70+ horsepower. There's still a number of places I'd like
to get around a little better...like I know I can tip into 1 faster, but
my brain says DON'T coming down from about 110mph to about 65...even
though I tried to up it more toward the end of the day, I should be able
to carry about 15 mor mph into that turn. Instead I just worked on
trail-braking deeper into the corner. I just had a bunch of fun. Mook
took it easy on me, it sure was fun to follow him seeing he puts in a
very fast lap on the SV at this track...plus his Triumph 675 was awful
pretty.

Pretty sure there was plenty more in the bike than I was willing to try.
Aaron's pirelli Supercorsa Pro takeoffs were exceptional--I only spun
the rear a little on 10 coming up the hill on the gas and it was only
just enough for me to think in my helmet "hey the rear spun a little..."
nothing to worrry about. Scott was running about a 1:03 there last
weekend (around 90mph on a 1.6mi track) and said we were putting in
around 1:08 laps, not fast but not slow. I think I was slower than
1:08, but I'll take his word for it--he's the one with the timing
transponder... I also had to put the GPR steering damper up to 3 at the
crest after 10 because that's where I'd catch an upshift and the front
end must be getting a little light. The handle bars would wobble enough
for me to notice, but not enough to rip them out of my hands...steering
damper did it's job.

Here's a couple pics --I didn't take many myself...

Met a bunch of good guys like Matt, Scott, Dave, Andy...good seeing
Elliot again and his friend Mark, oh and Mr Dirt--gotta love your new
SV! Extra thanks to Denny fair who is just a great guy and way too
generous with his time. Wouldn't have had the bike ready or have had
such an easy time getting to and from the track...I'd say the bike is
half "his" for all the time he's helped me out. Anyhow, my family still
thinks I'm crazy, but my brother sat in a NASCAR car around Jackson
Michigan (which I think is about on-par) and he golfs with my Uncle
which is just asking to be nailed with a drive off the tee should you be
standing anywhere near him ...just kidding Uncle Dick!
We got a hold of a bullet camera and put it on the bike to try and catch
some video of a lap on the track, if I can get it downloaded and edited
I'll post it on Youtube or something...
