New VFR Rider Intro

Hi All!

I've been lurking the list for a couple days now and wanted to introduce
myself. I've been riding since 1995 and was a member of the LA Biker
group. I rode a 1995 Yamaha FZR600 for a long time, and enjoyed taking
it on trips up the Crest, to the Rock Store, up and down Ortega Highway,
through Pala, and Santiago Canyon. I eventually gave up motorcycling in
early 2000 after too many friends passed away, and I hung up my
leathers.

Fast forward to last year, when my younger brother-in-law asks me if I
would teach him how to ride. I promptly told him "no" and that he would
just get himself killed. He said that he was going to learn anyway, and
asked me if an R6 would make a good beginner bike because that's what
his friends told him to buy. Not wanting to stand by idly and see him
hurt himself, I bought him a Rebel 250, and got myself an older Goldwing
and also a Sabre. All three bikes cost me less than $4000 total. I
made him go to the MSF course, then took him on a ride through Santiago
Canyon. It's a fun route, with very gentle sweepers and good scenery.
We left at 6am to avoid cage traffic, and were heading home around
7:30am. We were back in city traffic, and about 2 miles from home when
he took a left turn too fast, hit the brakes, hit the curb on the far
side of the turn and somersaulted into the bushes!

A trip to the ER, a couple X-rays later showed no broken bones, just
some bumps and bruises. I then sold off all three bikes, and my B-I-L
gave up riding temporarily. But my foray back into the motorcycling fold
was beginning. I bought myself a YZF600R (2002, used, $2200) and rode
it for a couple months then decided to give cruising a try. So I sold
the YZF, and bought a Suzuki Marauder 800. What a fun bike! But I hated
the cruising style, as it didn't have a lot of pep and carved corners
like a dull letter opener. So I sold the Marauder and picked up a
VFR750F, 1997.

When I was an LABiker, my favorite friend was Jim Dutton who rode a VFR
at that time. I rode it once and fell in love with the bike, but I
always thought they were so pricey compared to the deals you could get
on a 600cc bike. I was happy now that I was able to purchase a 1997 VFR
for $2000 from a private seller. I rode it around the block, and it had
so much midrange power, and get up and go, it was stupid easy to ride
and turn-in to corners, and it sounded great even with the stock exhaust
(something about the gear driven cams makes a great spaceship sounding
whirrrrrrrrrrrr).

Then I noticed it - on the title it had the words Salvage written in the
big red box. WTF? I didn't notice it before and the seller didn't tell
me about it. Oh well. I am currently negotiating with him to get some
money back because of that error. I still like the bike, and I want to
keep it, but I need to find out more about why it has a salvage history.
Any advice for me as to what I would want to do with the bike now that I
know this?

Thanks in advance, and I hope to see many of you out there on the road!

Welcome back! Considering the deal you got I wouldn't worry too much about
the salvage title.
It probably means it was wrecked, plastic damage is my guess, to the tune of
a total. And the bike was bought back from the insurance co.

If you land on your head, you didn't use enough throttle when needed.

If you land on your ass, you used too much throttle...

RE: New VFR Rider Intro

John,

Thanks for the information. Another question that I've got is about my
leathers. When I was on the cruiser I was happy to be in thick jeans
and a Joe Rocket ballistic jacket. But now on the VFR I feel like I want
some more protection. Back in 1995 I purchased a 1-piece custom made
leather suit from ZLeathers down in Huntington Beach. I was 23 years
old, single, fit, and weighed about 150 pounds. I am now 33, 180,
married with kids, and the darn leathers don't fit anymore.

Is there a place that will make the suit a little bit bigger so that I
can get into it?

RE: New VFR Rider Intro

I think I would contact Z-Custom leathers. They're a
high end leather company, and should be able to do the
work for you....

I think that Z will do alterations.
Anyone know for sure?
Then again, a 30# gain might require too much new cow!
