Tapping sound from my VFR. . .
So I got my VFR in October and few months ago, this spring, I started
hearing a strange clicking or tapping sound coming from the motor. I only hear it at idle and it usually comes and goes in irregular intervals, also I think I may be able to feel it in the right peg. I dont know what it is but it doesnt sound like anything Ive heard before like a loose chain or CCT. I also havent noticed any other side effects besides the noise. I thought it may be something to do with the valves so i went to my local shop to find out how much a valve adjust would be and while I was there I asked a mechanic to listen to it to see what he thought. They said that the sound was coming from low in the engine and was too slow a tap to be valves, his first reaction was that it was a bad rod or maybe a balancer shaft, but wouldnt either of those issues cause noise and/or vibration at all rev ranges, not just at idle? Ideas? Re: Tapping sound from my VFR. . .
I have heard of some "flap" on later model VFR's that makes a bit of a racket.
Something to do with your anti-pollution system.. Anyone else? ***************************************** Steve "Spider" Enfield 87 VFR 750 Sydney, Australia www.ozvfr.net FIGJAM :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: John To: vfr@xxxxxx Sent: Thursday, July 05, 2007 12:38 AM Subject: Tapping sound from my VFR. . . From:
There's a flapper valve in the airbox that opens and closes at certain rpm, it can be disabled with no real ill effects. The noise may be coming from the cam chain tensioners? I have no idea what these are (lol) but I do know they cause problems for Vtecs. -- Murray 'It's a tour, not a race... but don't get in my way while I'm touring!' -------------------------------------------------------------------- OzVFR Homepage - http://www.chaos-tours.net/ -------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

Subject: Re: [ozvfr] Re: Tapping sound from my VFR. . .
Probably not the Pair valve, the pair valve made a metallic strumming sound under throttle which disappeared with cleaning the one reed that was gummed stuck open. On my previous VTec I used to hear what sort of sounded like a loud popping / thropping sound that was most noticeable when rolling on the throttle from rest that was loudest ( very ) when the motor was hot. When I reported under warranty it to Honda SCM Lane Cove they mentioned all VTec's do it and said they quietened mine by lubing, it was quieter for a while but got progressively noisy again so didn't worry about it. This seemed to be normal on VTec's as Fabo's used to make the same sound, this came back to the flapper in the airbox. My Gen 5 doesn't seem to have the same noise or rather if it does it is not loud enough for me to worry about it. From: "Vee4" Tell him to drain the oil and look for metal particles in the bottom of the pan. If found, this is always a bad sign. Piston slap is easier to hear at idle but it will be "at speed". So will a rod. Slap is higher pitched than a rod which can be more of a knocking that gets worse as the engine is run up. Balancer will be at half speed like cam noise and depending on what's loose may only appear at idle. Find a mechanic who knows how to use a stethoscope or screw driver radar Cheers Steve http://www.vf750fd.com/ _______________________________________________ vfr mailing list vfr@xxxxxx For subscription and delivery options: https://lists.cs.wisc.edu/mailman/listinfo/vfr |

Re: Tapping sound from my VFR. . .
I am forwarding mails from the Australian VFR list to the Big list, as I
posted the question on the Oz list. And that was due in part to try and help out, because of the lack of responses. As the Aust list guys reply only on the Ozvfr list, I then cut and paste or forward to the "Big list". Hope some of it is helpful, and it has VFR content...
