I haven't read all of the messages on this topic, but apart from this
very interesting counting of angels dancing on pins, did anyone ever answer this question properly? This phenomenon has nothing to do with the chain! It is most likely a case of grit/sand/another foreign object getting trapped between the grooves in the eccentric adjuster and the swing arm casting. The grit enters the hollow swing arm through the large openings near the shock, happily bounces back down towards the eccentric, and collects in the aforementioned grooves. And since you're basically trying to turn the adjuster past a rock, it stops. The solution is to remove the wheel, hub, rear caliper stay and eccentric adjuster and clean out the swing arm... Some people have been known to (a) fill their swing arms with expanding builders' foam or (b) block off the openings with plastic or rubber bits in order to prevent this from happening again.
