Rider says his steering locked up. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over? Target fixate much? It's a MT10, too new for seized steering head bearings. I suppose out could be a freak occurrence, but until it's proven to be a mechanical problem, I'm sticking with Target Fixation, riding it of your comfort level/skill level. I ride that road regularly, trust me that turn can be taken at 65mph easily.

If it was caused by a mechanical error, then he'll be rich. I say it was too much bike, too much speed and way too little of experience. RIDER ERROR!

Saw this posted on FB and one headline read: 'California motorcyclist Mathew Murray veered off the Santa Monica Mountains when his steering locked up on his bike" Really?! His steering locked up?, I guess they don't realize that HE is the steering!

Inexperience & fear caused human lockup, mechanically I would think there would be some kind of warning something was wrong.

Target fixation along with poor road positioning.

He went from 4.7K rpm/48 mph just as he left the pavement to about 10K rpm/ 38 mph as he reached the edge, yet the bike was more upright when he went over than it was going into the turn! Seems the bike wasn't leaned that much, so in 3rd gear he had lots of engine braking and trail braking to steepen his turn rate. But he did miss the pole! After missing the correction on pavement and hitting the dirt, maybe this might just have been the justification for leaving the bike and low siding, although a low side coming off the pavement may have lined him up to take out the pole! Good that he didn't get busted up too bad and now lives to ride again. I think if he changes that "steering lockup" story to "I screwed up" he will have a much better story.

Another like the guy that hit the guard rail and left his bike in a tree and him downhill.
    Brain freeze.

This is just terrible. I hope he is able to physically and mentally ride again if he chooses.

He had the determination to try to save himself. Resiliency usually goes hand in hand with determined people.
So hopefully that will kick in and he will ride again.

I was on an annual ride in September a few years back with two of our three regulars in NE Oregon. First weekend of Bow Deer Hunting Season. ON of the guys was well ahead of me and another. He is a very talented rider. He came around a right hand curve with a bluff in the inside and a der came out of the ditch/ravine on his left and he hit that deer in mid air. Deer went off to doe in the trees on the bluff, and buddy down, glanced off a roadside tree, then he and bike went down a ditch about 20 - 30 feet deep and rip rap covered.

He had piece of mind to immediately climb out of that ditch to wave us down because we would never have seen where he went off. His gear is what saved him for sure. He was banged up pretty good but we were out where there were no phones, no cell coverage, in fact no one around. I was able to go find someone travelling about and some bow hunters happened by. With the winch on their ATV, We were able to winch the bike out and even with the bent sub frame, buddy was able to ride that VFR back to Spokane where my truck and a trailer was left a couple day previous where we loaded the bike up and we pulled out the next day to drive home. That was not a very comfortable ride from that point on for buddy. Next day he was black and blue.

Bike was written off but buddy healed up nice. He replaced the VFR with a Triumph nd since then something else.

Once we made sure all was OK with buddy, my Accident Investigations Skills were put to work and I took all the on scene photos for his insurance claim. Still have them, just not available on this laptop. In addition to the armoured suit he wears, he also wears a chest and spine armour underneath. ATGATT!

BTW. The bow hunters went and found the deer, tagged it and hauled it away. Nice piece of road kill to come across eh?

^^ This. Surprised on how many are ripping this dude in an arm-chair quarter back way. He almost died and summoned up the strength to fight for his life and climb up the slope. So what if he said it was the "steering locking up" or whatever. Even if due to an error on his part, maybe he was embarrassed and didn't want his insurance company and the whole wide world to know that he had done mucked up, or maybe he had rung his bell and didn't quite remember things correctly. We all have had less than stellar moments in our lives in which we might not have been at the top of our game. Just saying that some of you need to get off of your high horse and look into the mirror yourselves...none of your are perfect either.

Ghost_Rider your reasoning may be correct, I almost did the same thing 30 years ago on the Angeles Crest Highway. I admit no one taught me about counter steering in those days, I went into a big sweeping left hander and my brain said I was going too fast (I wasn't), so I tried to steer out of it and the bike went even straighter! Hit the gravel shoulder and went down on my left side, bike slid off the edge and hit a small tree dead square in the headlight and stopped. I grabbed the nearest bush after catching a reflector post with my shoulder, otherwise we both would have slid down a very very long slope. He could have done the same thing.

Man, glad you came out of that ok!

Agreed, he needs to evaluate what was the cause of his accident. Maybe he already knows it was his error and plans to take a class, who knows?! I was just saying to cut the guy some slack as he probably came close to buying the farm. Ride on!
