Your picture of the sunrise at the beach reminds me of the many we had at St. Simons Island, GA, with the little birds that would run in and out with the waves.

I'm sure you can. The biggest question is do you want a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. There are some excellent small mirrorless cameras these days, but only a few (I think the very expensive Lica) will not have a full frame sensor. A full frame sensor will give you a lot more light gathering power so you won't have to gain up the ISO as much and the larger sensor will probably have less noise when you do crank up the ISO. Also obtaining shallow depth of field with a full frame is much easier than a small sensor. The wide variety of lenses for DLSR's is a big plus too. I am currently looking a the Sony RX V for a small travel camera, it really is incredible with a lot of features. I have to have a viewfinder and a lot of small cameras only use a screen to view. The Sony has an electronic finder along with the rear screen. But it is almost 1k!

I use the site DPreview.com, they have except reviews and super in-depth comparisons. You can choose a bunch of cameras and compare apples to apples. Their database is giant. There are a ton of tools to help you decide. The prosumer/consumer market is big and this site can help you decide. Hope this helps.

The Sony a6000 with a kit lens will be in that range. This mirrorless camera has a ton of features for it's price point. It is a crop sensor, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find a full frame sensor in that price range. Full frame is great, but you can still take some really nice photos with a crop sensor, even shallow depth of field portraits can be done if you have the right glass. [IMG]

During Christmas you might even find the package kit with both the kit lens and the 55-210mm in your price range. The nice thing is you can always upgrade the glass as you go.

Guess I need to do some research on this. I do not know the difference between DLSR or mirrorless. I think she would need a travel type camera. she will be taking it on her bicycle rides. Any place on line to take a crash course? I'm going to check out DPreview as you suggested. Thanks for help

If you're looking for tutorials on composition, exposure triangle, depth of field, etc. There is a ton of free videos on You Tube to help you learn. Lynda.com isn't free, but the tutorials are more professional, plus you'll get access to all kinds of other tutorials to just about any software out there.
Camera stores offer low cost classes, I've been to a couple and you get out of them what you put in. If you show up prepared with specific questions, they can usually answer them, but if not, you get generic info.
Some professional photographers hold workshops that will cost more, but may offer more specifics depending on the photographers style of photography. I haven't done this, but I hear good things from some friends that have. Experience probably depends on the photographer.

This is what is so great about digital. You get instant feedback on your settings which really helps shorten the learning curve of the technical aspects of photography. The artistic side of photography has to be developed over time until one developes his or her own style. This is where I feel I am in my photography. I am still developing my style. I simply haven't taken enough photos yet.

You need to go try a few out in the store. My first digital was a Nikon CoolPix, having had Nikons for years I thought it was a logical choice, it was terrible. Took so long to take the picture, my kids got up and left before shutter fired! Cost me $900, ended up giving it to #2 son. Check for how quickly auto-focus & auto exposure works. I have lost touch with current brands, check the comments here. I started in the old days with film, went to RIT and majored in Photographic science. Had a complete Hasselblad setup, that was sweet. Now I am happy with the camera in the iPhone 10!

Here is a self portrait by the Hasselblad in my 67 Jag 3.8S sedan. Didn't retouch dust on negative.

Samuel what part of the coast was that? I love the Na Pali coast, have a friend that lives in Princeville and he has taken me on some epic trips up the coast. Secret caves and cliffs all over.

    Hey Gator,

I'm envious! I've only been there once - definitely want to go back again!

I think this is the one we went on (I'm not the planner in my family lol): https://www.napali.com/raft/snorkel/
    We departed from Kikiaola/Kekaha https://www.google.com/maps/place/K...0ec7d2b!8m2!3d21.9595027!4d-159.6923994?hl=en
and went clockwise around the island up to close to Ha Ena IIRC. We saw, no kidding, anywhere from 60-100 dolphins grouped together in places and possibly up to 200+ total during the round trip. I think we saw most of them between Nohili Point and Kalalau Valley (zoom in on the map - maybe 9 o'clock to 11 o'clock ish).

I wasn't too impressed with the few caves that we went into - I guess I was expecting longer/deeper exploration (and that's what she said... :D ) but overall it was pretty fun. Took a beating on the way back though, waves were choppy and I was sitting closer to the front of the boat - my back was sore for a couple of days after.

Sorry to spam you guys with vacation pics lol:

That is a very nice camera. A little bigger than what I want it for but for the price you get a lot for your money. Here is the DP review of it.

This is the one I want, its just expensive! Super small though. I normally shoot with a pair of Canon 5D's and a bunch of lenses. The little camera would be nice to carry just about anywhere.
