While there is some truth to this there is still break in and mating time on the rings to cylinder surfaces, there is a much longer break in time for the transmission.

Probly 10years back, I went on a trip with a buddy who had a Ducati SS900. He said he just switched to a synth from Dino on the thing with a whole 450 miles on the bike. By the time we were nailing twists in West Virginia the thing was spitting oil smoke at me as I followed the thing.. bleah. He ended up filing a warranty claim (yeah rings) and got a new engine for the bike. -- This is prolly a remote case, but I will still stick with the old school of running dino for 7k to 10k mile before the synth switch for a newer bike.

I doubt that synthetic oil caused those problems. Some cars are even broken in on full synthetic. Porsche breaks in their cars with Mobil 1 Full synthetic.

The way it has been explained to me is that synthetic oil gets through openings that mineral oil can't and before the rings are properly mated it can bleed into the cylinder and be "consumed" with the fuel and air.

New cars designed for synthetic oils are engineered to avoid your Ducati rider friend's problem.

Similar problems come from the classic car crowd who have been engines that have been run for a long time and after switching to synthetic oil they start leaking and jump to the conclusion that the oil made the car leak and has therefore caused damage to the engine when it is just slipping through the gaps that the dino oil couldn't.

My mechanic (Honda shop guy) says after the 1000km service a blended oil will be fine. He then recommended the HP4 which he's probably obligated to do.

The Honda HP4 is not full synthetic but blended.

Unfortunately there are no standards or minimums for what qualifies as blended. It could just be one tablespoon per barrel of base oil and it can be called a blend.

I contacted Penrite and was told by their representative that their blended oils contain a minimum of 20% synthetic. I couldn't get such info about the Honda oil.

That's not true at all. The thickness/viscosity is told in the oil weight. A 40 weight Dino is the same as a 40 weight synth. Just as thick. And can get in just as many places.

The basic difference between sythentic and Dino is longevity. Day 1, they are the same viscosity...day 2....that’s when things start to change...

I’d like to know if cars that come from the factory with synthetic have already been through a break in process at the factory.

There is no harm in running Dino oil for the first few changes. Maybe I’m just old school, but I have to believe there is a benefit to running Dino oil for the first couple thousand miles to ensure things wear in properly. Cheap insurance to me.

I will be running synthetic in mine, probably about the 3000 mile mark. Oil and break in are two largely debated topics. I guess as long as you feel confident in what you’re using, that’s all that matters.

If I bought a new bike I'd run synthetic from the first oil change. Of course the last new bike I bought was 32 years ago. Synthetics were
still pretty rare then, so I ran what was cheap: Castrol GTX.

synthetics maintain their lubrication properties longer, hence the longer service interval.....

    A bit of a bump.

I did get around and change the oil and filter in the bike today. Had a heck of a time deciding on which oil to use.
I was waffling between Mobile 1 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil, and the Castrol Synthetic Motorcycle oil. But simply
could not bring myself to spend nearly $50 on an oil change for the bike. Shoot, the Dodge costs less than that
    and it uses 3 gallons.

So I ended up going with Shell Rotella T-6 Synthetic. O'Reilly's had it on sale for $21.95/gallon and I had a coupon
for $5 off. Used a Bosch filter I had on hand and I'm good for less than $25. A lot of guys use the T-6 so I figure what
    the heck.

They don't make Castrol Syntec anymore that I used to use. I had a fair supply that I bought up when they ran a heck of a sale
on it and I bought a ton of it. But my last oil change used up the last of it.

My manual says 10w40 or 10w30 as an option.

Shame it only compares mineral to fully synthetic and not semi.

Yes but still no comparison as most of the oil questions are semi or fully synthetic not Dino.
