I have no idea what CBR you rode that you thought was extreme. But every road test review I've read always rank the CBR on top for street riding comfort (within the context of sportbikes). The R6 is extreme. Just look at where its clip ons are? They're below the triple clamp! The CBR is ABOVE the tripe clamp. The R6 also has a seat that slopes forward A LOT. The CBR's is much more level. In fact, ridden back to back, the CBR600rr's riding position is only one step less comfortable than the VFR800.

Under seat version I rode my brother had the one before which was nice very similar to vfr think it was a 2000 model, the underseat version I rode was more extreme than my gsxr 1000 k3 i had at the time. I learnt long ago to take no notice of road tests in magazines the only way to tell is to ride it.

Honda had the F-series CBR's throughout the 1990's and into the early 2000's. The F4i was the last of the F's and Honda kept selling them in the US alongside the new CBR-RR's for a few years. I had the privilege of riding around a friend's 2001 CBR600F4i. It's ergonomics were very similar to the VFR like you said. I believe the CBR600RR's first came out in 2003/04 (that's the underseat exhaust you speak of). They certainly had a more "compact" ergonomics via higher rear sets and lower bars. But when compared to GSXR or R6, the CBR still continues to put their bars 1.5 - 2 inches ABOVE the triple clamp and the rear sets are lower and more forward by at least an inch. Don't laugh...an inch here and there makes a noticeable difference! Honda has always put the most streetable comfort on their sportbikes more than anybody else and they are always criticized by professional road testers for this every time they test the CBR's at the track. The CBR600RR's are even MORE comfortable than the 1000RR's simply from having a shorter reach to the handlebars.

So getting back to the CBR600RR vs VFR800 ergonomics, they are close enough so that if one can comfortably ride a VFR800, the CBR600RR wouldn't be a problem. But again, this is all within the context of sportbikes. People who ride sport-tourers can justifiably say the VFR is too extreme!
