Good morning, all. Have been a member for a month or 2... just lurking and learning about these bikes. Have wanted a Gen IV for awhile, but they never seem to pop up. One popped up locally recently so I took a chance on it. As a lot of these 20+ YO sport bikes go.... this one has some very rough plastics. The draw was low miles (28K)... motor runs strong and has great response. Only issue I've seen with the motor so far is a slight oil leak around the right crankcase cover. I'm hopeful that a new gasket will solve that issue.

I had almost immediate buyer's remorse after purchasing, based on the condition of the plastics and how costly it can be to get replacements. I would love for someone to put my mind at ease on that one. :)

Along with the plastics being in rough shape.... there are also a significant amount of fasteners missing. I did a quick search the other day on eBay and found that there are numerous options for fairing fastener kits. A couple questions in that regard, as well as some others.

    1) Does anybody have a recommendation for kits? What and where to purchase?

    2) I'm assuming all original fasteners were stainless steel hardware? There are some black kits available, but I would prefer to keep the stock look on the exterior.

    3) Does anybody have experience with Airtech replacement fairings? My main concern is the fitment. Would want to make d@mn sure the fitment is spot on before dropping a grand on non-painted replacement plastics.

    4) I've check this site and VFRD for service manuals, but none of the links seem to work. Anybody have a suggestion for that? I also need to find a copy of the owner's manual, as the bike did not come with one.

Anyways, thanks in advance if anybody feels so inclined to answer some of my questions. Looking forward to getting back on a more powerful sport bike after spending the past few years working on 70's Honda's ('76 CB550 and '74 CB450). That being said.... servicing those old bikes is a pretty easy task.

    Take care!

Wish I had advice on any of your questions about the plastics or fasteners, but no experience there. Someone should pop up with answers.

There is this, in the FS section: http://vfrworld.com/threads/1986-vfr-700-complete-bike-part-out.54655/

In the mean time, just know that your jitters regarding the purchase will go away when you are out on the road and riding. Not all bikes have to be pristine, the mechanical condition is key. Besides, there are people who have managed to resurrect scraped up plastics and make them look passable again.

Thanks for the response! I'll be spending a lot of time with the 'ol JB Weld on the plastics. One thing that got me excited today is that I found a solo seat cowl for the bike. Isn't perfect... but should mesh well with the not even close to perfect fairings on the bike.

Can't wait to dig into this thing. Going to remove all of the plastics, then see what I'm dealing with underneath. Verify brakes, bearings, etc. Make sure it is safe to ride. It will require a lot of cleanup as the PO clearly neglected it. Hopefully I'm done with it by spring so I can get it out on the road right away. Anyways.... thanks again for the response. Will lean on this forum a lot throughout the process.
