Almost certainly. The clogged bit covered in black stuff is the main jet that operates at mid to high rpm.
The carbs on these are notoriously fickle so a decent ultrasonic clean of the parts you can remove is a good start. OR send them away to one of the specialist carbs guys.

Ya I knew that.I guess you didn’t catch the ; P at the end. Only one carb was that bad but all othe others were pluged as well.
The bike has sat for 10 years.
    Didn’t expect much for $500

    I did miss that.
    Apologies for insulting your intelligence.
Good luck getting it going. Seen a lot worse looking 1000s than that.

got the carbs sort of clean put the tank on and it fires right up and ran like a charm. Now the work begins. Strip it down sandblast and powder coat the frame. Strip all the body work down to bare plastic ( its been painted a couple of times ). Major cleaning of everything else, replace some missing parts and do a complete brake rebuild.

Eh, Steve, have you inspected the cam lobes yet ?? :humper: They will bite you if they're pitted or otherwise damaged, common on many older VF bikes. :(

    Thanks Squirrelman
I am very aware of the cam and follower issue with the early VF's. I also have a 1985 VF500F. The 1000 i have is a FF model which is some what less affected but .definitely not immune.

Does any one know where the carb vent tube is supposed to go?
    I’ve forgotten where it went.

Looking good! Don't forget to mount the rear down pipes before you get much further. You can get them snug enough to still move a little for final fitment and then do the final tighten with long extensions and swivels for the inner two nuts.

And I think the rear vent tube just angles down. I can check a 1000R I have the tank off of later.

The pipes are tight. Damn near impossible to tighten them with the rear shock on. If recall correctly there was a hose on the carb vent tube but I don't remember where it went. I've had so much stuff apart ( everything ). Pretty much just paint on the tank and plastics left to do. I hope to have on the road soon.

    Very shiny. Impressive work.
Whenever I see these bikes being worked on and looking good like yours, I always find it hard to believe they are over 30 years old. Whoever conceived them had a great eye for timeless design.

The VF1000Ff (1985) was not released in the USA.

The Vent Tube has gone thru a few Iterations.
    I have 2 styles on my 84 & 85.
Both go UP into the Aluminum Carb Intake Plenum, it vents into the motor.
The "T" tube points UP into the Plenum (with rubber grommet).

Is that VHT Chrome Color paint on the Valve Covers?
I've been Sand Blasting mine, and still not sold on what to do.

Use AntiSeize (Molybdenum-Disulphide) on the Rear Brake Pivot or you'll be back in there every few years.

Add a Rear Fender Extender to keep that new shock Shiny.

Don't use ordinary Grease on the Brake Caliper Slide Pins!

Where did you get that 4 -> 2 Exhaust Collector?

The valve covers are sand blasted and powder coated with ultra chrome powder from Caswell Coatings

The 4 to 2 collector came from

    https://www.boonstraparts.com/

It uses the original front pipes which must be cut from the collector/resonator

The mufflers I used are just Chinese knock-offs
Had to fabricate a couple of “S” pipes to get things to line up like I wanted

None of my bikes route the carb vent tube back into the plenum. Except for CA bikes, they just vent to the atmosphere. VF750F just takes a turn down about 3 inches from the plastic T coming out of the carbs. VF1000R routes all the way back into a downward clamp behind the battery for some reason. Don't happen to have my 1000F tank off at the moment, but I bet it is one of these 2 options.

Are we all talking about the same thing?
