"Sound Rider" is out with it's new Cafe to Cafe challenge. To qualify you must have insurance:

"insurance specific to their bike (required by Oregon and Idaho State law)"

I've never heard this. I dont have bike insurance. So do you get busted if caught without it crossing into states that require it?

In the United States of Litigation, I would never even consider operating a motor vehicle without full coverage insurance with at least $500,000 of liability coverage.

You can go online to companies like Progressive and get a quote for your bike & location. You should be able to get a liability only policy for about $250 per year and they will divide that up into 4 payments. They more the coverage, the more the cost.

Minimum insurance in BC is liability coverage. I think that holds true most places if you dig into it. You have to have insurance to cover your liability if you are involved in a collision and it is your fault. So I suspect everywhere in Canada and the USA requires by law that you have liability insurance. I know in Canada, this is required as a minimum.

Here in BC the basic compulsory government sponsored insurance for my bike is $1168.00, That is your annual license fee, and basic coverage as per the schedule of the area you live. That included an $857.00 claims free reduction in fees.

In addition to that, there is my comprehensive insurance that covers the bike for my losses if it is my fault, theft and fire, trailer if used, and my gear for another $225.00 which is private insurance.

Insurance is huge rip of in Comunada.

I'm not sure about this but I think when it comes to liability insurance it's the driver not the vehicle that is insured. If you have an accident driving someone else's car you're still covered for liabilty.

Thats why i dont get this "bike specific" insurance.

I could be wrong, the wife handles the insurance.

    One source-

"Liability insurance coverage on a personal auto policy follows the driver no matter whose vehicle is being operated, provided it is an eligible vehicle. All states, except for one (New Hampshire), require at least liability coverage. Liability coverage protects the insured (i.e., follows the driver) when the insured operates a vehicle owned by someone else. In such a situation, they will still usually be covered under their own auto insurance policy"

That could very well be. But the bottom line, is you are likely required to have liability insurance of some sort be it on the driver which really seems to be the best idea, or the vehicle, which I suppose is more likely to ensure that liability insurance is in place. Unfortunately, my insurance will not cover me soon as I cross the USA/Mexica border.....going south bound of course.

Speaking as an ex car insurance broker, you need motorcycle insurance. Auto insurance will NOT pay any claim on bike accidents, liability or otherwise. Please find a better person to buy insurance from.

My Progressive quote was based on two motorcycles, price will vary according to your location, age and driving record. Without liability insurance, they are going to come after you personally, false economy.

Tis is precisely why in BC, you must get your liability coverage with the Government Insurance Company. They do not leave it up to trusting the people to get proper liability insurance. Most would forgo that. Here there is a minimum liability insurance of I think $1.m with a recommendation to get more at a cost. Anyone in BC with valid registration on their vehicles has a minimum of 1M liability, even on their bikes. With this way, property owners who suffer a loss at the hands of a driver of any insured vehicle, is covered.

Are you considering participating in this Rob? I take it this is not necessarily a tour around rather you can target to hit each of the eateries once over a certain period of time? I might consider participating in this event and incorporate some of the destinations in a longer tour of some sort. Hell. I could even ride along with your for some of it if you are signing up? It would be my honour.

Shit I pay $430 a year in Utah. Damn Utah Drivers!;-) Yes I have a clean record and good credit score. I used to pay $53 with my car included a month with progressive and now with State Farm I pay $34 but left the car off because it almost doubled with state farm. That is with a $250 Deductible and $150,000 liability. Utah State Law requires insurance on any motor vehicle. I have a Lean holder so I have to have full coverage. But I would regardless.

I have 3 bikes with Progressive, very cheap. You can get a multi bike plan for a few dollars more than a one bike policy.
