Getting some progress happening on my plan for the bike. 1996...16,000 miles. Mechanical is all complete so venturing into the (mostly) cosmetic fun stuff.

    Step #1 - CBR1000RR Tail Swap - 4/11/18
I started by studying 10SEB's build in detail and he has been very helpful by messaging. I used a 2006 CBR1000rr subframe and manufactured supports from 1"x1" square solid 6061 aluminum. I could not use the 20mm square bar as the lower frame holes on the 1996 are not the same as the 800's. If you can see, I welded the 1" bar flush to the outside of the subframe which let the bar hit the bottom receive about 1/4" into the bar. I then cut out a section of the bar wide enough for it to slide past and be bolted up. The beauty of this is that it creates two points of support...the bolt itself...and then the cutout back side which lets the support rest against the frame. Super solid. The key to doing this is making sure you have the angle you want and then cutting out just enough for it to rest against it. You also want to cut off the top OEM mounting flange on the CBR1000RR subframe so it's not hitting the tank. I trimmed mine a good bit back as I am customizing a fairing piece to fit along there (The plan as of now anyway).
    LeftMount.jpg RightMount.jpg

Started assembling and fitting it all back in...will finish that tonight. I used the "combo" tail light which has the integrated turn signals. Have some basic wire-connections to make from the VFR harness to the lights and have to move the ECU to the empty area under the back rear of the tank.

Will be working on the Underseat-Exhaust mount tonight as well. The two-brothers high mid-pipe I have looks to work nearly perfect when turned upward (still fully seated with main pipe). I'm probably going to get a bend and cut what I want out and weld it together. Also going to try and do the coil-on-plug conversion while this is all apart. I have complete CBR1000RR engine and would like to use the Coils from that...I know there are some threads and will see if those guide me enough.

@joeyvans - Ebay...Guy in Poland. By far the best quality fairing I've ever seen. Don't bother looking for a used one...if you don't mind paint matching (which is really difficult to the 4th gen red, get those).

UPDATE - Assembled to see what it looks like with seat on and what a "side pipe" would look like (sort of). Working on the under seat muffler setup today. Seat position has me about an inch higher than before...I like the increased "forward angle" it adds to my seating position...NONE of this change is adviseable if you are going to do long rides on the VFR...there is nothing comfortable about the 1000rr seat! ha! It may be possible to have it a bit lower angle but not much if you want to do under-seat exhaust.

    NOTE:
ELECTRICAL - The Battery leads are too short...making new longer leads. Also, swapped to a shorter profile battery with the same specs to fit in the CBR1000rr battery box.
WIRING - As far as I can tell, tucking the wiring on the 4th gen is ridiculously simply. Made a foam "nest" for the ECU and will not have to relocate that anywhere else on the bike. The only two things I haven't addressed yet are the Filter/Pump relocation and the Rectifier position. Neither seem difficult just haven't gotten to it yet.
Tail-Light - Apparently I lost or never got the "sub-harness" that I need with the combination rear light. Ordered replacement yesterday...until then will probably have a super fast turn rear turn signal blink. Ha!

    OBSERVATION
This is a SUPER simple mod to do with the 4th gen and a CBR1000rr tail (which are cheap and readily available). Anyone who can do a good Aluminum weld for you can make it happen. If anyone is interested, I can create and send a template for the "supports."

Copy that. I’ve had those in my eBay watch list for quite awhile. I see they have a “make an offer” option too. Can’t imagine they are willing to drop the price much. But if they did for you, please PM me what you got them for. Really loving this build.

looks great, are you going to position the silencer at that angle or more along the angle of the underneath of the seat unit?,just curious

Will like to see your underseat exhaust mock-up too, but I kind of like the angle of the can in the last pic. Reminds me of the steep angle on the RC51.

I did not do the make-offer....it's not worth it to try and get a few bucks off now seeing it in person. It's fiberglass BTW and super nice...worth every penny. I didn't get to the under-seat exhaust yesterday as hoped. I moved the R/R all the was up front and got stuck trying to find a good position for the fuel filter & pump....not having much luck yet but will solve it tonight. Probably going to get some longer tube today and run iut along the inside of the subframe and under the rear fairing. I fabricated some cool mounts to use on different places up front but could not get comfortable with the fuel lines being so close to the engine. There is a possibility I can fit it all right there by the petcock exit but not sure yet.

For the under-seat exhaust, I'm going to use my 2Bros can and start by laying it flat (it's oval) and mounting it so the end is where I want it. I'll be using the pipes I have and fabricating what I need to go from there to collector. Also going to cut-off and reposition the exhaust tip so that it doesn't point to the side (since it will be laying flat now). Simple stuff and should be able to get to it tonight.

One thing I thought of last night is the need for a tire hugger now. I have one for a cbr1000rr but it's double swingarm of course. I see the ones on Ebay but they are outrageously expensive. It would not be too hard to take the CBR one I have and "combine it" it with the VFR chain guard to make a mold from and just make one myself. Dunno...we'll see what happens when I get there soon.

    Update 4/16/18

Final "fit-up complete"...but a couple changes still to come

Electrical - This is super-easy and very little had to be extended or released in any way from the harness. Using the CBR1000RR battery box/under tray all pretty much lines up perfect to just lay the harness in. The 4th Gen "ECU" goes under the seat fairing and is zip tied to the tray that look like it was made for it. :) I used some rubber to line the plastic tray...probably not necessary but gives it some shock protection. The relay, etc all fit right down in the slots beside the battery in the tray area...again the CBR1000RR must have something very similar as it's a perfect fit like it was made for it.
*REAR TAIL LIGHT - The real tail light I have it a combination light and signal LED unit. It has the subharness with it that provides the resistance needed so it doesn't fast-blink. I used the VFR extension cable and simply spliced in the ends where needed.
    batterybox1.jpg batterybox2.jpg

Fuel Pump/Fuel Filter - Found a nice place for this. The cbr1000rr subframe provides a lot of nice space to use under the seat up to the vfr tank mount. I "manufactured" a bracket that attaches to one of the open holes on the subframe and then holds the fuel pump...I faced the pump forward to the tank and up a bit so I could run the fuel lines as straight as possible. The only turn it has is up and around to the fuel filter which is mounted on top of the pump above the metal CBR1000rr cross member for seat. It's all gravity friendly from the tank just-in-case... Tank slightly down angle to filter...filter down and around to pump, pump slightly down straight shot to carbs (with the stock 90 degree turn to meet the entry.
    Fuelfilterpump.jpg

Tire Hugger - A simple fitment, one hole drilled, and some shape cutting and the CBR1000RR hugger works perfect. took 15 minutes.

Pipe/Silencer - So completely happy yet with this....I did a rough final fitment but there is plenty of room still to get the silencer in there almost flush. I decided to order a new end-cap for it from Two Brothers today and need that before I can lay it flat (oval). Once I have that, I'll have my local place here do a full stainless pipe match up to the collector box. For now, it's rolling as shown.
*Bracket - I "manufactured" a bracket that attaches to one of the side holes on the subframe and "bends" up around to about the center of the wheel well arc and then 90deg turn down. The silencer hanger bracket joins there and is attached with a bolt and a screw. License plate is hung off another hole next to it. The manufacturing is simple cutting some metal, bending it, and drilling needed holes to mount. silly easy stuff here.
    finalfitup1.jpg

BIG NOTE: After some test riding, I've realized that I have accidentally made the PERFECT VFR rider setup for anyone over 6'. The additional seat height (with my helibars) dramatically increases the leg room. The CBR1000RR seat length is also a lot longer so there is a ton of room. I'm only 5'10", but I can se this being a dream setup for anyone over 6 foot riding this bike. Ironically, it may actually be a little TOO much room for me at 5'9"...dunno yet.

Really like the CBR1000 tail, I would very much like a template for the supports.

I'll do you (or anyone else interested) one better...I'll sell you the subframe I made with the supports. I determined the seat position it too tall for me at 5'10" and am going to make a hybrid subframe from the rear of a CBR1000rr frame and the front of the original VFR subframe. Already made it actually and will post pictures later. Price is $100 plus shipping to the US only.

Looks good! I modded an RC-51 tail section to fit my VFR, as the welding was out of my capabilities. What all was involved in getting the hugger to fit?
