I'm glad to have found this forum after having deciding to step into the world of the interceptor after years of two and four stroke riding off road. I recently acquired an '85 vf500 for a couple hundred, figuring it will be an interesting learning experience and if it's a total basket case or just too different for me I can get my money back before dumping the price of a new bike into it. :D

Is it running? Or did you buy a project bike? If it turns out to be just a parts bike, I think you did well.

By the way, welcome to the wonderful world of VF/VFR's. Pull up a chair, and make yourself at home.

It was not running when I purchased it last weekend. I got rid of my old XR600 a couple years ago and have been without a bike since then.

I saw it for sale last Saturday for $200, and figured it would give me something to monkey around with and if I got bored with it I'd just sell it.

Well, I got it running and it sounds surprisingly good - though from a guy who is more familiar with the sound of a big single cylinder thumper than an old four cylinder street bike, that is not saying much. :Bolt:

Before you run the engine anymore, If you did not drain/ clean the gas tank, do so ASAP. Flushing bits of rust or old sediment into the carbs will give you a very bad headache-of-a-time trying to get it to run correctly after the tiny ports are plugged up.

The great thing is that you have good enough comprssion for the motor to run. That makes the bike worth all of $200 easy.

Thanks for the info! Already did that, and tank is perfect on the inside, nice white metal. The exterior has a couple dents and one area with a small patch of surface rust. I will run with your advice (pun intended) and replace filter too etc. I appreciate any info and suggestions for these old bikes.
