I do believe Derstuka and Reg71 both had in the 130,000 range without adjusting the valves. That said I would have to think they, and likely yours need at least a couple valves adjusted. I hear it's a $600-$800 job at the dealer. Is it worth that on a $1500-$2000 bike? Probably not unless you or a buddy can do it or you plan on riding it long term.

You are so right and I agree with you.

Plus, my problem is, I have never done it and don't want to ruin anything. Maybe during winter I'll get adventurous and give it a try, but for now was looking for some data points to weight the risk!

I checked mine a year ago last winter at 36k miles. I had a stuck thermostat, so it did not take much more to remove the tappet covers and check the valve clearance. The hardest thing, in my opinion is removing the throttle body/ injector assembly, followed by hooking every thing back up to that assembly when putting it back together. The service manual and taking photos before dis-assembly both helped. Getting the feeler gauge under some of the rockers in the front cylinders was also a challenge. This was my first attempt, and it was not as difficult as I thought it was going to be.

All were within spec, a few of them were just barely in speck. I noted all of the clearances, so that when I check them next time I will know if they have changed. I'd rather they be on the loose side of spec.

You didn't pull the throttle body/injector assembly just to check the valves, did you? That isn't necessary
    with a 5th generation.

No, my first objective was to replace the faulty thermostat. I did had more room to work with all of that out of the way.

My advice is to check the rear cylinder banks valve settings. They are easy to get at compared to the front. If they are within spec or close to it, you can pretty much be assured that the front set of cylinders will be the same. If they're way out then you'll have to check and adjust all the valves. I've only done the valves once on my 4th gen. and they were a pain doing the front . Next time I'll strip off the front end for easier access and do the fork seals and steering head bearings.

You just made the same mistake I made. This thread isn't about doing maintenance, it's about not doing maintenance.

Go back and re-read the title of the thread: "Anyone who never adjusted valves on a 5th Gen?"

The Original Poster in this thread just wanted one or two people to put up posts telling him it was okay to ride the bike forever without doing any of the Honda recommended maintenance work.

Lint, Stephanon2whls, and Y2Kviffer were the only ones who "got it" and they validated the Original Poster's position on maintenance. At this point I'd bet he's long gone from this thread and maybe even the entire forum.

(It's an honest and logical mistake to assume that somebody posting here on the forum would be looking for help with properly maintaining their VFR, but you have to remember that there will always be someone who views things exactly opposite of the norm.)

Nope, I am still here and proving your "assumption" wrong.

And thanking everyone who has shared and provided their input, including you.

Did I ever say that "it was okay to ride the bike forever" ?

Thanks for your 'valuable' input though.

How so? Wrong because you're still around? That was a "bet", not an assumption. Or do you mean to say I'm wrong (on the subject that I actually did make an "assumption" on) because you've suddenly decided to do some maintenance on your VFR? If this is true I applaud your change of heart.
If by "valuable input" you mean "accurate assessment", you're welcome.

I was well aware of the question. However I saw nothing wrong with giving extra information as opposed to a yes\no answer.
