Hi Guys, creating a separate thread to answer this question. While I have my "Clean" VF1000R and my Euro Project VF1000R, both with factory correct engines. I have another Frame and enough parts to build a 3rd bike (once im done the Euro). However, what I dont have is a 3rd engine. If I find a 3rd engine, of course that solves my issue for that 3rd bike build, however these bikes are not plentiful here in Canada (despite the fact that i found 4 of them 2 weeks ago).

    So....what other engines wil fit in a VF1000R frame (with some minor mods). I believe a VF750F engine, possibly a VF1000F ?

If these will fit, or others, Ill build a Custom "VF750R" maybe in rothmans livery to go with my VF500R.

what say the experts, what are my easiest options ??

IMO, there is no sense putting another model engine in the 1000R frame. MAYBE if I found a cheap decent 1000F, MAYBE. And then there is still a bunch of work with spacers and changing the cooling system configuration. And now you have an even rarer engine in the bike (at least here in the states).

If you are going to build a VF750R, then I would find a stripped VF750/700F and put your 1000R running gear and fairings on (which is what I'm gonna do a couple builds from now). 41mm forks with quick release clamps, unique swingarm with hanging caliper, Comstars. But now you are dealing with a VF750/700F motor that brings it's own set of potential problems. The 1000R is cool, but is a pig if you don't update the suspension. In stockish form, it's the motor that is the bright spot. Springs/emulators, elimintaing the air cross over so I can adjust the fork height and a DMR modified CBR shock made my 85 a new bike.

Trying to put in a 90-97 VFR motor might be OK, as you will have more space to try and get it in the right spot chain alignment wise, but my head hurts thinking about all of the stuff that will come up every time you "figure something out". Fixing one problem often creates 2 more in heavy modding jobs like that. And now you have a 600+ lb. VF750R.

    good advice, I appreciate that.

I will see if I can find something at the right price and go from there. Agree with your direction on one mod leading to another...I can see that when things dont bolt up directly.

Can I ask you about the CBR shock mod please. Did you buy a CBR900 shock, what is a "DMR" modification? can i buy a shock off the shelf and bolt it in ?

OK, thanks. Any direct bolt in replacement at a reasonable cost ?

I have a bike addiction (yes I admit it), I have so many bikes , I wont be riding this bike a whole lot, I rotate my road bikes annually , usually have 3 classics insured for the road and my 2014 VFR800 is always insured. So I dont want to spend a fortune on a shock

And it might not be a matter of wanting to spend money, you might HAVE to. I've had a total of 3 VF1000 shocks fail on me. One on my 84 1000F (that got a daugherty F2 unit) and two on my 85 1000R (that I eventually upgraded to that F3 unit) They will compress but not return. Or they return at a glacial pace. The only one that hasn't failed (YET!) is the one on my 9000 mile 86. Now I'm glad mine failed.

Thanks, I think shipping a 200lb engine from Dallas to Canada would cost me a kings ransom. Thanks for the offer

OK yea, understood. After i looked at the 2 ive taken off so far, certainly the cable adjuster that is attached to them is seized for starters.

we'll see what the 3rd one is like

How different are the 1100 engines? Are they basically the same as the 1000s, just with bigger cylinders or are they overall bigger motors than the 1000s, in the same way as the 1000s are bigger than the 750s?

Well, the 1100 is shaft drive, so there's that.

And I'm not sure which way you were describing the 750 vs the 1000, but it is possible to install a 1000 in a 750 frame without major surgery.

Ah, shaft drive, yes I wasn't thinking about that. Are all 1100s shaft? I rather think they are.

My comment comparing the engines was that the 1000 was I believe a significant increase in weight over the 750, was the 1100 a similar increase over the 1000 or were they basically the same. Irrelevant in fact since the shaft makes them significantly different in any case.

So how similar is the 1000 engine from say the last VFR750 (Gen 4, RC36.2)? You can see where I'm going with this. :) Now that would be a project worth doing. I'm thinking quite major frame mount differences. But solvable maybe? Anyone tried anything like this?

    Actually, I don't know why I'm even thinking this. I already have a 1200cc V4.

There have been so many threads started regarding engine swaps. Rolling chassis, engines, saws and grinders aplenty at first. Then they realize there are so many things they didn't didn't think about. A couple more posts, then you never hear from them again. Even Honda had a hard time packaging the V4 on the bikes they designed. Of course anything is possible and there are people on here that could do it. Haven't seen many success stories.
