Oil pressure light

    I will order the pressure gauge and do the test but I'm skeptical...since the problem arises after at least 30 minutes of riding, I'm not sure that I'll be able to mimick this behavior in my garage.

    Can I plug the gauge and go riding? Would I be able to install everything to do so? Where's the pressure switch, on the top of the motor?

    As your oil pressure light is WARNING YOU that riding this bike may get very expensive that would be the last thing I'd do. My gut feel is your oil pump is screwed however that's the point of the gauge.. I think your oil pressure is going to be very low & terminally low once it's warm...

    As your miles are low l wouldn't automatically assume bearings - yet....

    EZ access after the right side fairing is off. Oil sensor is brassy-looking thing under a rubber cover just in front of rear cylinder base.

    The switch is in the valley on the right side, not great but it could be worse. I time rate this job at two beers, maybe one if you focus.

    I never intended to ride the bike without double-checking the pressure BEFORE.
    If the pressure isn't good from the start, I won't ride the bike obviously.

    But if it's good, I won't let the bike run on idle for 30 or 45 minutes to see if the pressure really drops when the light turns on.

    So I won't be fixed, I won't know if the oil pressure actually drops or if it's a false positive.


    Anyway, the pressure gauge is ordered. I'll let you know.

    But maybe you won't hear from me for a few weeks because we are going on a 3 weeks trip in Ireland the GF and I in 1 week and a half. So I don't know if I'll be able to test the pressure till then. I ride the Buell in the meantime so it's not a short term problem but I didn't buy this Interceptor to keep it parked in the garage.

    a cheap, easy check would be to simply replace the oil pressure sending unit.

    Not super cheap, a new sending unit is at least $30, and would be closer to $50 at the dealer I'm guessing.

    Plus all your doing then is acting like a dealer: throw parts at it until you find something. It's better to locate the problem and then fix that.

    JMO of course.

    I agree that chucking parts at it is not a good plan. If it really is low , aboot 7-9psi for the light to be on, then you will need to remove and inspect the pump. The seal on the oil pump pressure relief valve and the suction screen should be suspect, parts 6 and 14 in the diagram. The relief valve could have failed to open and chewed up the pump, never heard of it in a Honda but Yamaha had to recall the newer Vmax when it came oot for that reason. If you have to go that route you will have the pan off so you can inspect for possible wear metals.

    Can you drop the pan without pulling the engine? That would make a bad job a little better.

    Ok SgtDuster you've been back almost a week. Long enough to get a 12 pack and do some tests. Enquiring minds need to know. I await with bated breath the results.

    Sorry, had so much to do since our return from Ireland (which is a highly recommended destination BTW).

    I know that I should crack a cold one and have a look at it. My motivation is pretty low right now and since it's not my only bike, I don't feel the urge but I promise that I'll do it shortly and let you know.


    Where is this pressure sensor located anyway? Can I remove it without disassembling the whole bike?

    The Honda service manual clearly illustrates the location of the pressure sensor, so why not read it ? :rolleyes:

    Don't mind Squirrelman, he often comes across as a "OMG the glass is nearly completely empty and we're all going to die" sort of guy.
    He doesn't mean bad, it's just the way he writes things.
    The sensor is in the V behind the front cylinder bank.
    But I agree with him on reading the manual to get a better idea.
    If you don't have one, you can download one from VFRD for free as long as you join.

    As I said earlier, I have the shop manual for every bikes I own but since this one is new to me, I don't have this one right now.

    It's not like I never tried...

    Anyway, I'll register to this VFRD forum and read this manual since it's the only thing you are allowed to do. I'm wondering why this whole Internet thing has been invented...if all you need is Haynes!
