My dad's 1985 vf1000r's rebulit carb was put back on today. We have it pretty much back in one piece. We went to start it up and so far it hasn't did much more than backfire or fire for a few turns while spinning the starter. We have a little fuel rig set up but not hooked up to the tank yet. We went and bought a new battery and it still does the same thing, just spins faster now. We have the plugs out right now and they are gapped at .030. They are pretty black on the end and smell like old gas. The engine sounds like it wants to start up but never catches or fires without the starter turning. We are assuming it's not getting enough gas from the little rig we have setup or not getting a good spark. PLS HELP
Check for sparks first, then open each float bowl drain screw enough to verify there's gas inside. New plugs usually help. are you using choke when cranking ? carbs may need further cleaning.
Make sure all plug wires are going to the correct cylinders and are tight. Make sure the wires feeding the coils are going to the correct coil.
It's been running for a couple of days now. It smokes pretty bad tho. It's not a coolant leak. We but grease on the boots when they went in. It could be that burning off or the left over mouse nest out of the pipes. But the engine sounds like it's missing when it holds a rev at about 5k. The smoke gets pretty thick too. It's like a white smoke, comes mostly out the left pipe first then both when it revs up. The carb was rebuilt and is running on a mix of non ethanol gas and 110 racing fuel. Hasn't been out for a ride yet. I figured it would have cleared up by now
