    Hi Matt,

Did your weigh the old & new parts of the CoP idea ? Any weight saving there ? I just ordered a set of 07RR coils to fit to my 5th gen.

Ok I weighted the bike yesterday it has a quarter of a tank in it (2 bars on the fuel gauge) I was super pressed with time I didn't fill it up and she came in at 466lbs. Ill fill it up and get a better reading.

OK I've done a half upgrade to the CoP tonight, the rear 2 cylinders are rigged temporarily using spade connectors. To seal & stabilise the CoP in the VFR 5th gen plug hole, I have added 2 x O-rings that sit on the lower lip of the CoP top rubber. This seals them & stops them rocking, which would not be good. I measured the resistance & the original coils have a 3ohm resistance & the CBR1000 (07) coils have 1.5ohm, not that it seems to make any difference to the running. The CoP units are 100grams each, so 0.5Kg for all 4 including the cabling. The old coils are 300grams including the HT lead & plug cap, or 1.2kg for the 4, so the CoP saves 0.7Kg. I've not ridden it yet, so will see what happens tomorrow. But it starts & runs fine. I'm planning to do away with the airbox top this winter, by replacing it with a tank sealed space, so the space at the rear of the airbox occupied by the coils will become part of a larger airbox space ! Bonus  Happy tinkering.

Definitely take some pictures of it when you get it done.

Rode to work this morning, no noticeable difference, front cylinders are on old coils, rear pair are on new CoP. All works & no difference. I'll get some pics next week, as I'm not about this weekend.

On the ohm differences, I had a thought on the way in, resistance changes with temperature & I guess that these CoP units get pretty hot living in the Plug tunnel with NO ventilation, so that 1.5ohm cold could become much more when warm ! I'll try to measure this.

    Have a good weekend all.

OK rode home, all OK, so that's 20 miles today. Bike was showing 97c on the temp gauge when I turned off. Took a few minutes to de-kit & get my meter out. #1 cylinder is easy to get to by removing the seat. Checked the coil resistance & it was 2 ohm's so I think my theory is correct ! Heat increases the resistance.

It's possible, that the ECU's have different maps because of the different emmossipn regs, but I would be very surprised if they were actually different units. That said the ECU has nothing to do with the coils, other than triggering the spark based on the pulse generator output, i.e. The ECU cuts the power to the primary winding which initiates the spark.

So call me crazy but ive been searching for rear sets and we all know there are none sooo I got to looking at the sixth gen where there are rear sets available but they run different swing arm linkage so I guess my thought is why can I swap the linkages out and put different rear sets on.?

That's exactly what you can do, change the lower alloy bracket where the dog bone connects with one from a 6th gen then fit 6th gen rear sets !

I do but I will be getting myself a bike that is just a dedicated just for the track. I want something that I don't have to pour money in to just to get the bike into a fair handling class something with more power lighter etc.

I think the VFR's are more than just fair handling bikes. I saw a guy on a 6th gen with hardcases carve through the Dragon quite easily.

My 2nd and 4th gen handle quite well...though my 4th gen is a but heavy. :p

My point is, VFR's handle quite well. I guess you mean you're looking for something that handles better than your 5th gen?

OH! Get a Triumph 675R. Soooo hawt!
