    APRIL 3, 2017 6:45PM
    Australian Associated Press
PLIGHT OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE BY THE NUMBERS:

    - Aboriginal and indigenous people make up about 3 per cent of Australia's 24 million population

    - They are near the bottom across all economic and social indicators

    - There have been failures to meet almost every target including reducing the infant mortality rate, the enrolment and attendance of children in school and number of adults in jobs

    - Aboriginal life expectancy is 10 years shorter than the rest of the population

    - Indigenous child mortality declined by a third between 1998 and 2015 but there's been no significant decrease since 2008 and it is still more than double that of the rest of the population

    - Employment rates are sliding with 48.4 per cent of Aborigines in a job in 2014-2015, compared with 72.6 per cent of non-indigenous people

    - The juvenile detention rate is 24 times higher than for non-indigenous Australians

    - Incarceration among adult indigenous people rose 77 per cent between 2000 and 2015

    - Indigenous suicide and self-harm rates are at "crisis level"

    - The hospitalisation rate for Aborigines related to self-harm jumped 56 per cent between 2005 and 2015

    - Aboriginal people die as a result of suicide at twice the rates of the non-indigenous and it's worse among the young

    - Aboriginal women are 10 times more likely to die of violent assault and 34 times more likely to be hospitalised as a result of physical assault than non-indigenous women

    - An estimated 90 per cent of such crimes are unreported.

Yes, GG, Australia has a pretty dark past with respect to it's indigenous inhabitants and there is still a lot of room for improvement today. It's a complex issue and unfortunately it tends to get politicised with the politicians being guided by their ideology where they would prefer to blow hot air up the oppositions arses rather than working together and with the experts and community leaders to find real solutions. Politicians have been setting targets and patting themselves on the back for generations without actually achieving anything much at all. They only seem to want to look as if they have done something for the next couple of years until election time comes around again.

Australia isn't alone in having a poor record on how we have treated our indigenous peoples, but we seem to be slower than most in addressing it.

We should have a contest to see who treats indigenous people the worst. With the right promotion it could be a really nifty addition to the next Olympics.
