do you need a gasket on the crankcase cover?

Sorry about all the questions. I am right into the tidy up of my machine and need the knowledge you guys all have. Appreciate the help so far.

I have removed the right crankcase cover for repainting. Found a guy who will match the paint. First question is can I bog up a couple of minor scratches and will it stick if I use car bog?

Second question is do I need to use a gasket when I put back together or will liquid gasket do the job?

Third question, does the sight glass come off? There is a metal cover behind it which rotates but does not seem to be coming off.

i used a tiny 1/16" bead of the liquid (red RTV) on my right side cover and it has worked fine for 10K miles so far no leaks, fouls or errors...

You can also make your own gasket using a cereal box card board. I have used this method about 20 times and never had a problem. I do not think the sight glass was made to be removed.

Do you have a preference? I'm a fan of Frosted Flakes, but wondering if maybe Cheerios would be better suited?

I cut up a UPS box as a base gasket for a NSR once with no repercussions. If it was my bike though, I woulda popped for a gen-you-wine Honda part. But thats just me.

What if I like oatmeal and it comes in one of those circular boxes (read: round)? Its kinda like the old tree falling in the woods and no-one was around to hear it fall...Did it really fall>? I say Fuck convention and go with that damn circular oatmeal box. ; )

Use a non hardening sealant. One that stays rubbery otherwise it will leak. oem gasket is about 2mm thick. For the price it's very easy to make your own, plus you'll have spare for when you need it and the shops are shut.

Not done the side cover yet as having it painted. Have ordered a real gasket but one of the benefits of being in New Zealand and 2000 miles from our nearest neighbor is that spares stocks are minimal and the gasket needs to come from Japan. We'll see how quick it comes and how impatient I am to get it going.

Gasket came from Japan in two weeks. Good service from Botany Honda. All back together and no leaks with the smallest smear of sealant.

I'm about to replace my oil pan on my machine for one that has all the bolt tabs. Can I also make a gasket out of a cereal box?

Would soaking it with WD-40 work to seal it or what is recommended?

Man you guys will go through a lot to avoid buying a gasket. Don't get me wrong I have made them and done what needed to be done in a pinch but would prefer to replace with OEM if not in a jam.

I'm such a noob...if I buy something it's, "Ha sucka you coulda made one out of blah blah blah." OR If I read something that sounds relatively sound it's "You cheap b@stard! Don't ever scrimp on blah blah blah."

Can't win for losing. I'm just trying to keep the Minister of Finance (wife) happy by not spending too much on the bike she already thinks I spend too much on.
