Well, I got it!!! What a great bike!! My first ride blew me away. I was very comfortable on the bike and it ran great. I was able to trade my magna in straight across and they gave me some "bonus bucks" to boot! Here is the VFR picture if you click on this: Honda 1998 VFR800
I was able to talk to the previous owner and he is the original owner and traded it in on a Goldwing. He said the 16,000 mile valve check had been done and all were in spec. He has not upgraded the R/R or added the new harness so this is something I guess I need to check into. I am extremely happy and look forward to getting to know everyone and learn what I can from everyone. Thanks again!! Lance

Congrats! You've purchased a refined solid bike that is very capable. The only downside to owning a VFR is explaining to your wife/girlfriend why you've come home several hours late from a "quick little ride"

That is unless you having a wife/girlfriend that enjoys these time miscalculations while riding pillion or on her own bike.

    Regards,
    Rollin

Thanks guys, I sure am happy with her. I have a question though, how do I find out if it has a power commander or something that was put on for the fueling? The man didn't remember if he added one or not when he put the exhaust on. Where would I look for it? Also, if it does not have one, do I need to put one on due to the aftermarket exhaust or is it fine to run the bike without a power commander? Thanks, Lance

It would more than likely be under the seat. If he installed a PC I would think that he would remember it because he would have had to download a map or have custom dyno tuning done.

So let me get this straight... you traded your Magna for the VFR and they gave you money back to boot?

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Ok, thanks, all I found was a adapter that looked like it was for a battey tender hooked to the battery under there. So do I need to check into a PC or will she run fine like she is?

It is not absolutely necesary to have the PC on a 5th gen even with an aftermarket exaust and air filter. Most of the 6th gen guys and gals do it mainly because of the transition point of the VTEC to smooth it out. The 5th gen does not have this problem. However after all my mods I installed a PC3 and had a custom tune done the bikes engine temp was a little lower(a plus in the summer) and I gained 6hp and 3ft/lbs of torque at the rear wheel over most all of the rpm range. I would say if you do decide you want to maximise your bikes potential the PC3 is needed but if you feel content with the bike as it is now it is not. I dont think the 5th gen has much to gain from a pc3 unless you have a custom map made so if you go that route plan on spending an additional $250 for tuning.

Thanks Steven and everyone for their help. It is really appreciated. I will probably be back asking more questions about the bike in time, so don't give up on me!!

    Thanks,
    Lance

I can see why it was hard for you to give up your Magna. It's really nice! But you'll soon forget it the longer you ride the VFR. And you got the best year, a '98!

Ah the one cruiser that most of the VFRW members don't hate. Wonder why?
Had an early gen1 V45, just couldnt afford to make it live anymore. May it rest in the spare parts pile.

Congrats dude... welcome to the '98 club. Just some 2 cent for you.. if the bike has 23000 mile and the R/R is still original, well, its due to eat it. The '98s were/are notorius on those. I think that would be the first thing I would spend some bucks on and the then add the aftermarket harness --- vfrness from Wire My Bike - There's quite a few threads on this.

    Good luck,
    MD

The bike looks like it is in great shape. Nice pick up. I had a 5th Gen and absolutely loved it - I'm sure you will too. I agree that I don't think it needs a PC. Did you get the rear seat cowl with the bike?
