Is my height and weight a good match for the VFR800?

I'm looking at a 2002 VFR800, it's a 4 hour drive (one way) to look at it, so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask you guys, the ones who know this bike best in case it's not a good fit.

I'm 5'6" and 155 lbs, 25 year old male. I'm looking for a sport (with a bit of touring spirit) bike that will be comfortable to cruise/commute and do short tours on. Another similar bike I am looking at is the BMW F800S/ST.

I'm just a little concerned that the VFR800 might be too bulky of a bike for my frame. A lot of people with the same build as me are quite comfortable on the BMW F800S, but I can't find any real information about riders my size on the VFR800. I sat on my buddy's Aprilia Futura the other day (33" seat height) and it was just about the highest limit I could do.

We have a couple of full blown midgets that ride gen 6 and they do just fine.

 

My wife's 5'-4" 115 lbs. as used to swing a leg over my 5th gen back in the day (she's a little "top heavy" though...hopefully you don't have that problem). She really had to "one-foot" it with the Corbin saddle, less so with stock.

 

This test of the '02 lists a seat height of just under 32" and a 534 lb. wet weight.

In my 20's I weighed 10lbs. less than you do at 5'9" (30" inseam) and rode a Yamaha XS-750E seat height 32.4", wet weight 557lb.

Low bars, 3 into 1, suspension, intake, quarter fairing, etc...
I did get the seat cut down a couple inches to get lower 'into' the bike but it was still a one-footer situation at stoplights due to the width of the seat base, BUT...

I threw that thing around madly at high speeds on the back roads of New England, NY, PA, P.Que. and more for several years with no issues other than those caused by my own squidliness!

I wouldn't worry too about the 'bulk' and you could get the seat worked also.
If the test ride feels good, I say Go for it!

Thanks for the input guys. I know there are plenty of aftermarket mods and parts I can use, but I'm mainly referring to stock for now, as my budget doesn't have flexibility for add-ons.

Personally, I am shorter (5'4'') and lighter (148) than yourself. And much older (60) too. So I suggest that you test ride the VFR and I believe you will not have too much problem. Mine is my second VFR as the previous one has been destroyed by a cage. I installed lowering links on my 1st VFR but, for me, it did not make much difference.

 

The loaner bike at my BMW shop is a F800r. I've taken it home twice while they were working on my R1200s. I really like riding it, but it is no where near as fun as my '98 VFR. Not as smooth, not as strong and not as fast. Plus, the twin is kinda buzzy at anything more than freeway speeds.

I think if you rode them back to back, you'd buy the VFR.

Every time I ride the VFR, I know I'll never be without one. I have considered getting a new Interceptor, but the extra $7k for the same performance (with out gear driven cams) just doesn't make sense.

 

I'm about the same size, 29" inseam. Wish my legs were a little longer and the bike a little lighter, but it is not a problem. I can get one foot down flat at a stop without getting my ass off the seat, like I had to do with the DRZ400S. That thing was too tall, but at least it was light.
