Is this the CCT problem?

    Hello All,

    Long time Lurker, new poster blah blah etc etc,

    Noticed this noise on my '04 Vtec. From What I've read I'm leaning towards thinking I need to replace the front CCT, anyone care to confirm or deny?



    Thanks for any advice.

    If it is the CCT I intend to replace with OEM honda parts, not sold on this manual lark.

    I don't know, but that is a horrible noise. I wouldn't ride it until I had that one figured out. When my CCT came to the point of needing attention, it was no where near as bad as that.

    Thanks for the response. I did a period of riding exclusively with headphones and I didn't notice the noise until it got bad (no more headphones for me, just regular old ear plugs). Thinking to change the CCT as a matter of course as its a 40K bike.

    I think I had mine done somewhere around 80K km and never since. I have 209K km on it now

    That sounds horrific. If it is a CCT failure, then it's a complete spring failure in the CCT. I would worry there's something else there.

    Shit..... well I've ordered a CCT, gasket and key. I guess I'll change it and hope for the best. I'm also moving house next week and am skint so excuse me while I go pour a stiff drink

    It's one of those things you'll know real fast if it fixes it or not. The CCT isn't too expensive, and always needs replaced anyways. Fingers crossed the spring just broke in it.

    This may be a long shot, but how does the bike run? I recall a similar noise on my mom's old '64 Chevy Belair 283. That time it was caused because one of the spark plugs was out.

    That's an interesting idea, sitting on the bike it does sound more like air leaking under pressure than metal on metal contact. I'll have a look. I'm going to change the front CCT as soon as the parts arrive (couple days), while I've got the body work off I'll have a closer look at the headers.

    I've never heard of that happening, but I'll take your word for it and have a look while I have the fairings off to change the CCT. Thanks for the idea mate

    The main reason I suggested the exhaust leak is that it sound alot like my 83, when the header for the two rear cylinders slipped off short stock pipe.

    I’m with Allyance, the header nuts might have come loose or off. This happened to the rear header of one on thepretender’s bike. It happened while we were riders not in Malibu, sounds very similar.

    That sounds a lot like how mine did when one of my stator bolts became loose (I forgot to locktite them after replacing the stator). Have you done any stator work recently?

    I can't recall having ever had the stator cover off. Though thinking about responses above this is an aftermarket exhaust system (fitted in 2015 IIRC) so I'll have a good look at the headers too. For now, the bike is washed and in my garage, when my parts arrive I'll change the front CCT, check the headers and have a look at the stator cover bolts. Hopefully, between those three it'll be resolved (I need this bike to go to work, been looking online for a cheap short term commuter and frankly, in my price range, they're all shit).     I had a little suzuki gn125 that ticked like that ( but not that loud ) turned out to be a loose exhaust header. Socket on the nuts and it stopped . I'd try that first.

    UPDATE,

    Tightened the ever so slightly loose exhaust headers, no difference.

    I've removed the front CCT ( pain in the ass if you don't remove that coolant hose thats in the way) and here I'm stuck.

    How do I tell if its broken? I've already ordered a new one, and will fit the new one with fresh gasket anyway but I can't tell if this one is broken and so I don't know weather to feel confident that the new one will fix or, or be pissed off that its probably something else.

    I hate problems like this....

    As for the CCT, it retracts with the use of the tool fine, looks in decent shape (except wear on the head, though that's as to be expected I guess). I can't compress it between my hands if that makes any difference.

    Anyone know about this?

    Maybe it wasnt the CCT after all ..........:Help:

    If it won't compress then it's good. A broken one would compress I think , but not really my region of knowledge . . 5th gen you see. My guess was loose exhaust header nuts !
    Replacing them will give you peace of mind knowing they ain't gonna let go any time soon.
    I'd probably show the video to a mechanic and ask for their thoughts before spending any more money.

    Basically the CCT's last approx 36,000m.
    Just replace & forget. The rear one is far easier to do & it is WORTH doing BOTH at the same time as they both wear..
    You will not be able to tell a worn CCT as the most wear will be on the bucket which isn't the fail point.
    I replaced the buckets, CCT's & gaskets. The Honda CCT's work just fine.
