Hi Everyone, Sorry to have to ask. I seem to have lost the only key I received when I bought my 00 a few weeks ago. I spent 4 hours looking. (i know they will turn up when I replace them). I searched this site and found some info and read my manual. Then called a good locksmith. He is happy to do a new key for me if I have the codes. Having the ignition barrel will be cheaper. I know the codes are supposed to be stamped on the locks of the ignition, tank and helmet lock. A couple of questions - Which one is easier to remove? I looked at the helmet lock and it has locked threads (that probably need to be drilled) I read about the ignition and the manual states that I have to remove the combination meter first. Why?? On my 5th Gen does anyone know if the threads on the ignition are torx or locked or something else? Will I have to remove the triple tree? Ive been caught up with maintenance on my older gen 5 (so I can sell it) that my new bike has been put aside and it appears so has the key. Thanks for any assistance, advice or heads up before I start

Try contacting Honda to see if they can provide you with the key code using the VIN number. If not, the ignition will probably be your best bet and if I remember correctly it does use Torx fasteners. I know you said you looked everywhere but did you remember to check to see if the key was accidently left on the seat lock?

I use a pick set to pop the tank open and get the code from that lock, another option and Honda locks tend to be rather easy to defeat.

Ditto _ The Tank lock may be the easiest IMHO.

Thanks for the info mate. Yeah I checked the helmet lock. I was actually looking for the key to cut a spare. Might try Toe's idea first though

Man you guys in the US have all the fun! Guns and lock picking gear.
It is illegal in oZ for both unless licenced. Spose I could home make but would prob break something.
    Thanks for the reply

Just need to be a licensed mechanic in California and you can buy really cool stuff. If you try it yourself you may be suprised how easy it is, pick the bottom of the lock first and work your way oot to the top. The bottom one is the tightest.

I got the ignition off - without having to remove half the fairings (as the manual suggested). Dropped it into the locksmith on Fri and picked it up with 2 keys today. Checked all the locks worked -perfect!!
Fitted the ignition and I'm happy for $35-.
I took some photos that I will post up for future reference. Thanks for the advice

After a bit of fiddling I removed the ignition. Managed to do it without having to remove half of the fairings and instruments. Dropped it into the locksmiths on Fri and picked it up today with two new Honda badged keys. Tried all three locks... worked perfectly. Reinstalled ignition and I am happy again for $35-
Thanks for all the advice guys. I now own a set of Torx fittings for future use. I took some photos that I will post for future reference.
    Cheers

To get the ignition off without having to pull all the fairings and dash off to unclip the wiring connector. There is a set of torx fittings that you require. I bought mine from Repco. The fittings you require are T40 first and then T10 (S2) - think that means security 2. Here is a photo of the T40 - sorry about the quality.

Then with two 3/8 extensions go up between the front guard and headlight and line up with the big Torx bolts on either side of the ignition. It helps if you remove the horn and brake bolts (10 & 12mm sockets)just to allow straighter access.

    Hi Pap11y, Cheers mate.
If it helps someone it's a good thing. Pretty shitty thing - lost keys. I kept my bike key separate to all my other keys (work etc) cause didnt want to scratch triple tree.

Yeeesss i got it off !

Thanks a lot for that, before to read you i got off the ignition switch alone (3 S2 torx screws), i thought that turning it would have allow me to start the bike and bring it to the garage, since the two T40 screws were really hard to move ... Did you remember if you could switch on through the switch once off the lock ? i'm afraid to have burn something, all fuses are OK though ... My extensions were a bit short to go up through the front guard, then i accessed the 2 T40 Torx screws with no extension on the socket side but one (plug spaner) fitted on the sleeve to increase the lever. The threadlocker (yellow glue) eventually came off , Honda garage will send the reference engraved on the lock in Paris and i should have new keys in 2 weeks, i looking to by a safe to left the spare one ;) Thanks again for your clear illustrates message Pantxoa

    Hi Pantxoa,
    No worries, glad it helped.
To be honest I dont remember trying to switch on the ignition. I was just glad to get it off without having to remove all the front plastics. Lucky I had the two extensions from my socket set.
    Cheers Mark

I just wanted to say thank you for all the information and photos. I bought an 02 and dropped helmet on the key and wedged it in wafers of the cylinder and tried starting it. Stupid I know. Well here’s my lesson.
