Sometimes you have to stand back and let someone else do it. I’ve been lucky that I have most of, if not more tools that I need to do these projects. Most importantly, don’t ever try to do something that you are not equipped for or have the money to replace something that you could break!

Prolly a good call to stand down on the forks, more of an intermediate job, and some specific tools to boot needed to help....

    - Just stuff n tips...
    - On your gasket issue,, more autozone trip... but this stuff is useful... and theres a scraper tool too...
    https://www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/gasket-removers/permatex-gasket-remover-low-voc-formula/
    - Suggestion -- clean the metal of both sides of the covers with solvent and make them purty.. clean! clean!
    - dont reassmemble the gasket "dry" - my taste is to use
    https://www.permatex.com/products/g...x-aviation-form-a-gasket-no-3-sealant-liquid/
    - the brush in the bottle is too big to do a clean job, so I like to cut most of the head off a Qtip and apply to the metal sides of the covers. Neatness counts.
    - As somebody mentioned, your gonna need a torque wrench... avoid Harbor Freight on this one, a good one will go 100 bucks or more...or mbe rent one at AZ
    - At your bike shop, they might sell this Original cleaner/polish stuff.. pick up a can.. good for cleaning near everthing... Headlights?
    http://www.originalbikespirits.com/products/spray-cleaner-polish/

As I mentioned before, for a first timer you have done a phenomenal mind blowing job... keep it up! (wow!)

I disagree ... I grew up in a heavy duty diesel / hydraulic machine shop ... if tiny little micro abrasions from steel wool are going to impact your gasket seal, then the ones that a plastic scraper leaves will be just as bad or your gasket is a POS ... lol

Sonetimes is better to pay someone that has the skill and tools.
Do you have more money or more time?

JMO as stated. I just don't like using any abrasive on a gasket sealing surface. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Sounds good ... though plastic will be every bit as abrasive. ;)

Okay, I'll post one last time about it. Stainless steel sink and appliance makers say never to use steel wool to clean them, as it will cause scratches
and leave steel wool fibers caught in the scratches and lead to rust.

I figure if it will scratch stainless steel it will play hell with soft aluminum. I've never seen soft plastic scratch aluminum.Okay, that's my last word, and everybody's happy. :wheelie:

Any specific treatment for these to get the brown yucky ickyness that looks totally old and grody off? Something I can find at AutoZone?

Very clean! Maybe I should not have used this polish that mello dude suggested? It was the one thing on his list that I did have LOL so I figured why not.

No worries, before I polished it I cleaned and wiped it clean and made sure to lube it before I polish it up for the photo.

    Spanks! I be tries.

    But heck no!

Men are so needed. Even for me that tries to be handy, I cannot do it all. A man would be very helpful with my fork tubes. And to make me laugh. And to slap my arse every once in a while as we tinker...but only if I was his lady.

And who is going to lift moto off of me when my ultra safe moto lift fails?!! I guess I be die with my love.

So...you men are needed! Really it seems men could may need a dork like me that can contribute and be a silly turd. Wonder who is missing out

So it's purdy, not perfect, but purdy and better.

Now I be clean up the brakes. I'll make sure to grease the slide pins and both sides of the pads so the no be squeal. Haven't been fussing with the gasket again yet either.

    Major moto cleaning day!

I had taken off some personal days around this weekend for MotoGP. But since I did not go this year, I kept this one day open. It was perfect to spend on Moto.

    There was prep.

    20180423_122916.jpg

    Tools.

    20180423_125725.jpg

    Grodyness.

    20180423_130849.jpg

And one sore sore surgeon who spent hours on hands and knees.

    20180423_144507.jpg

Around 12 hours, but moto very deserving of the attention. Won't be perfect, but is definitely an improvement.

    I scrubbed out much Alaska.

    20180423_162053.jpg

    20180423_190444.jpg

Thanks to all of you helping through this process. As always, it means a great deal to me and helps to not feel so alone.

I will not be putting on the new parts until I get the forks back. Just washing the Moto today made it wiggle back and forth on my super safe motorcycle stand. I do not feel like dying under Moto this week.

So when the forks come back I'll put the wheel back on and moto will be more study for the rest of the wrenching to commence.

For now, calling it a night.

    Impressive AM.
There are a lot of blokes who would not attempt the job you have done.
I therefore nominate you as an honorary Australian.

Props to the work you have done! I wish I had the patience/time/will to do that to mine. It deserves it.
I see you do this and think " maybe I will do that this weekend....." but I know I wont. I wish I had some OCD to go with my ADD.
Just enough to do this kind of thing. You are making me feel guilty. But I deserve it. I can never get past the "fix the problem" way of life to the "prevent the problem" way.
Great job, keep it up. :Pop2:
